Young New Zealand crew of Paul Snow-Hansen and Jason Saunders have bounced back from an up and down performance in the ISAF World Cup at Palma, last week to win a silver medal, on a countback at the 470 Spring Cup taking second place in the Open event. The regatta is being sailed in La Seyne-sur-mer, in the south of France near Toulon. Also competing were a second New Zealand crew of Jo Aleh and Bianca Barbarich-Bacher who performed very well in the Open fleet and were top womens crew.
Seventy two boats from 23 countries competed in the event, and we have reports and video in this edition of Sail-World.
There was a big turn out at Westlake Boys High School yesterday to celebrate the life of 1968 Sailor of the Year, Geoff Smale. While the numbers were impressive - just who was there even more so. We report on the many facets of Geoff's life as seen through the eyes some of those who knew him in this edition of Sail-World.

One ex Westlake pupil who was not at school yesterday was America's Cup skipper Dean Barker (who also hails from Smale's club, Murray's Bay) for the simple reason that he was en route to New Zealand from Qingdao after the latest round of the Extreme 40's. Dean has been providing a daily blog of the regatta and in this edition of Sail-World we have compressed the entries into a single story. You can see the full series by clicking here.

On the subject of the America's Cup, we have featured an excerpt from Michelle Slade's blog. Michelle is a New Zealand sailing journalist living in San Francisco and rocked up to the first in a series of the US Sailing's (the US national sailing body) Speaker series entitled 'Cup Chat'.
Here Tom Ehman, Bruno Trouble, Peter Reggio and more discuss, in a US chat show format, the 34th America's Cup and look back on the Cups of days gone by. Certainly Ehman and Trouble go back a long way, and have some great memories to share. As well as the story there is a link to the full video of the show - conducted by GGYC Staff Commodore Marcus Young, who seems to have another career as a sailing talk show host ahead of him.
