Welcome to Sail-World.com's New Zealand newsletter for 10 April 2011
Great news Sunday morning from the Princess Sofia Trophy regatta in Palma, where NZL Sailing Team have placed in the top five in five events. The icing on this cake has come in the form of three medals - two Gold and one Silver, which is an outstanding achievement by Jo Aleh and Bianca Barbarich-Bacher in the Womens 470 and Sara Winther in the Laser Radial, with Tom Ashley taking the Silver medal in the mens Windsurfer.
To put these results in context, Nerw Zealand won two medals (a Silver and Bronze) at this event in 2010. Last year, there were five top ten placings in the third round of the ISAF World Cup series. New Zealand did not compete in two of the ten Olympic events at this regatta. It should also be remembered that the young 470 combination of Paul Snow-Hansen and Jason Saunders won back to back races in the qualifying rounds beating the top two British crews - who had medalled at three successive Olympics between them.

Overall this is a very good and encouraging result. The key will be to maintain of improve the standard in the next 12-18 months leading into the 2012 Olympic in Weymouth.
As we mentioned in the last edition of this newsletter the regatta organisers of the Princess Sofia Trophy have excelled themselves in the media department, and we are pleased to be able to present some great images from the event, along with video.

Sad news, Sunday morning that one of New Zealand's former Olympic sailors, Geoff Smale, is listed as missing after his light aircraft was reported overdue on a flight from Dairy Flat to Ashburton. The aircraft was capable of making the 800km on a single tank of gas, and was very well equipped with safety gear, none of which has been activated. We have the latest update on the search in this edition and will be updating and adding to the story as more news comes to hand on www.sail-world.com. Our thoughts are with Geoff's family at this anxious time.
Emirates Team New Zealand's Volvo entry made the usual clandestine move from building facility to fit-out facility in the early hours of Sunday morning to get down the motorway system in minimal road traffic.
