Sail-World New Zealand: 4 April 2011
Welcome to Sail-World.com's New Zealand newsletter for 4 April 2011

The entry period for the 34th America's Cup has closed, followed by the announcement of seven new teams (five accepted, two still subject to the vetting process as to their bona fides). That makes for a total of 14 Challengers and one Defence team from 12 countries (including USA).
Despite earlier concerns about the attractiveness of the AC72 catamaran and the world economic situation, it seems that the ardor for doing an America's Cup campaign has not really diminished. Some will have concerns about the quality of the Class of 2013, but judgment on that count will have to rest until all the teams have been announced/outted and key sailing crew named.

One has the suspicion that the money boys are leading the charge in the first instance and will hire skippers and crew further down the track once funding is more secure and substantial. The latest announced challenger saw fit to name an Art Director but no skipper or sailing team, and it will be interesting to see what substance emerges further down the track.
Maybe it is also a factor that the AC72 wingsail will probably become the most valuable corporate billboard in world sport, and that is maybe what is driving the flavour of this America's Cup.

In this edition we have an analysis of the entries, the America's Cup World Series schedule that has been announced and the criticism that has attracted. In the same story is an audio clip of an interview conducted by PJ Montgomery, yesterday with America's Cup Regatta Director, Iain Murray on the effects of the substantially increased entry and other ramifications of the announcements by America's Cup Event Authority in Plymouth, UK on 1 April.
We've a round up of some of the sailing in New Zealand over the past few days, including the Harken Schools regatta and the Big Queenstown Downwinder - sailed in Kiteboards and Windsurfers.

There's a further episode in the Laser rule change story. This time we have an interview with class designer who explains his views on the matter and why he sold his rights to the class to New Zealand's Spencer family who have been long associated with manufacture of the Laser.
