Welcome to Sail-World Canada
The Rolex Cup Regatta is back in St. Thomas!
The annual Rolex Cup Regatta is back this week-end in beautiful St. Thomas USVI. I had the pleasure of enjoying the hospitality of the St. Thomas Yacht Club last year and witness fellow Canadian Richard Oland's overall win on Vela Veloce. This was their first experience in St. Thomas on a relatively new race boat and the crew performed admirably well! Richard is back to defend his title this year and my colleague Greg Nicoll will be there to report on all the action. Stay tuned for more!
The Velux 5 Oceans webchat with the skippers turned out to be a great on-line event; armchair racers from around the world got an opportunity to interact directly with the skippers one-on-one. Although I was originally a bit skeptical about the concept, the formula appears to have generated a lot of interest and the skippers proved to be very engaged with their supporters, providing answers to a wide range of questions from technical to preferred freeze dried food flavor (Brad prefers Leonardo de Fettucini from Alpine Aire). Derek had a number of Canadian supporters on-line and provided some insight about his summer plans with family and optimizing his boat for the light air on the next leg to Charleston, SC. The fleet leaves Punta del Este on Sunday.
While the Barcelona World Race leaders are slowly making their way up the Atlantic, a few yachts at the back of the pack are experiencing 50 to 60 knot winds in the Southern Atlantic. Dick and Peyron on Virbac-Paprec are still in front, although they just played their strategy card and switched into Stealth mode to become invisible to their competitors; they are approximately 2000m miles from their destination in Spain. MAFRE has maintained their second place position while Neutrogena and Estralla Dam, who have been engaged in a close battle over fourth place, are slowly catching with Renault ZE in third.
The recipient of Ontario Sailing's Legend of Ontario Sailors Award presented by Canadian Yachting Magazine will be presented at the upcoming Celebration of Sailing Island Gala that will be held on April 2, 2011 at The Boulevard Club in Toronto. The award was first presented last year during Ontario Sailing's annual fund-raising gala to the crews of Evergreen (RHYC) and Magistri (RCYC) that survived and endured the great storms that hit the 1979 Fastnet race. All the best!
