Welcome to Sail-World.com's New Zealand newsletter for 21st March 2011
This edition is the video edition of Sail-World - not that we planned it that way but that is how it has come out.
We have several excellent videos from Oracle Racing, including one that takes us behind the scenes at Core Builders Composites in Warkworth. Everyone that has been through this facility has been blown away with the technology and approach - and all very low key. A visit through the building facility by the US Ambassador provided the opportunity for George Johns to once again weave his magic, as Tim Smythe gives the Ambassador, and us, the guided tour.
Another from Oracle Racing is a cafe/bar room chat between skipper of USA-17, James Spithill and Alinghi sailor, and six times America's Cup veteran, Murray Jones as they compare notes on the 33rd America's Cup. This is superb piece of video, both in the way that it is constructed, but also the content and way that Jones and Spithill work through the technique of alternately interviewing and answering each other. Sounds crazy, but it works!

On Friday night we braved the traffic and ventured south of the Bridge to join the best and brightest of the NZ marine scene celebrating the 20th birthday of Events Clothing. In this edition we have a story and some images from the event and look forward to receiving a few more. Great to see competitors within the marine industry mingling and talking in this environment, and clearly while they all work for themselves, they all equally work for New Zealand.

The BMW Auckland Cup was raced over three very different days, concluding on Sunday. Ivor Wilkins reports in this edition on the regatta, and as usual provides some great images.
From further south, the 420 Nationals attracted a good fleet at Evans Bay, and we report in this edition along plenty (albeit small) images from the regatta. The 420 class attracts a good mix of sailors - young and old - male and female - racing on an equal basis. But youth crews dominated the top of the points table.

Back to the videos - we have a clip sent from Australia of racing onboard a Lightweight Sharpie - a three man dinghy not seen in NZ. However the quality of the on-board video with a stern mounted camera is quite remarkable.
Oh, and there's another in our collection from the Fremantle America's Cup - this time of Tom Blackaller's radical US-61 duking it out in the Fremantle Doctor with KZ-7.

On the international scene, Rich Roberts reports from Long Beach on the Ficker Cup - in which a young New Zealand crew, Full Metal Jacket raced for the final spot in the prestigious Congressional Cup.
Like Ivor Wilkins, Rich Roberts is another who can write a very good story backed up with great images - and we have three day's worth from both of them, in this edition.
