Sail-World New Zealand: 10 March 2011

Shooting video aboard the AC45  Gilles Martin-Raget/www.americascup.com
Welcome to Sail-World.com's New Zealand newsletter for 10 March 2011

Yesterday we had the privilege of sailing aboard the prototype AC45, little sister of the AC72 that will be sailed in the 2013 America's Cup.

In this edition we report on that experience, and present a couple of clips from the on-board video we managed to take using small waterproof cameras and an iPhone4.

It is obvious from the video footage that the AC45 is a completely different boat from the type that has gone before her in the most prestigious trophy in sailing.

Our later thoughts are that the wingsailed catamaran will be a particularly unforgiving boat. It will be very easy to cover a lot of distance going the wrong way, making defending a big lead difficult - and that should help keep the racing live to the end.

The old maxim of staying between your man and the mark might work might work if the racing is close - but a big gap will create a lot of opportunity for a trailing yacht in a type that is very close to 18ft skiff sailing.

However all that is speculation now. But certainly sailing at over 14kts in 6kts of breeze was a new experience, and something that was just not possible in the 24tonne monohulls.

The fourth and final leg of the two man Round North Island Race has concluded. We have the scant finish details that are available in this edition.

Wilmot and Page - triple 470 World Champions and Olympic Gold medalists  Victor Kovalenko

In this edition we feature a long interview by Christine Hansen with triple World 470 champion and Olympic Gold medalist Nathan Wilmot. He was in New Zealand recently to coach double Olympic silver medalist, Nick Rogers and new crew Chris Grube, as they worked up their new 470 from Mackay Boats. It is a very interesting read, and covers a lot of ground both on the 470 and the wider aspects of sailing.

Thanks to our contributors for their help and input, we're here to help sailing, and help those who wish to help themselves. A special thanks to those who have contributed to this edition.

Smeg and Gotta Love It 7  Michael Chittenden

And once again our thoughts go out to the people of Christchurch. We have a story in this edition from Yachting NZ on the effect on sailing clubs in Christchurch which were affected by the 22 February earthquake. Again any fundraising you or your club can do will be appreciated.
