Welcome to Sail-World Canada

The race is on for second place!

Check out our great images of Rolex Farr 40 Worlds held in Sydney where Australia's Transfusion was crowned World Champion. Amazing coverage by the local Sail-World contributors in Australia!

While the yellow boat should be docked safely in Punta del Este, Uruguay by the time you read this, Brad van Liew will be keeping an eye on his fellow competitors who are almost within earshot of each other; separated by only 10 miles after over 23 days at sea. Derek recaptured second place from Gutek early yesterday but it's now a drag race to the finish as Christopher has made major gains and caught up with them over the week-end. A fitting finish for Sprint 3 of the Velux 5 Oceans!

The major news story from the Barcelona World Race is the amazing performance of Neutrogena's duo of German Boris Herrmann and American Ryan Breymaier; they have finally secured fourth place and are now settling into the pursuit of Renault Z.E in third place. The race leaders are nearing South America and will have to contend with Cape Horn very soon; hopefully, they will experience favorable conditions similar to the ones their Velux 5 Oceans single-handed counterparts enjoyed last week.

One Girl's Ocean Challenge and Diane Reid are less than 100 mile from the Miami Sea Buoy, the end of the single-handed 1000-mile qualifying run she undertook 11 days ago. It's been interesting to say the least, with a wide variety of conditions, challenging navigation while dodging freighters and cruise ships. Congratulations Diane!

The Ontario Melges 20 fleet is looking forward to the next big event for this new popular one-design series; they will meet again at the Bacardi Miami Sailing Week starting on March 10th. We have the photos from the Miami Winter Regatta held a few weeks ago!

The 31st St. Marteen Heineken Regatta is on again later this week; this is one of the premier 'fun-in-the-sun' party regatta in the Caribbean. A fleet nearing 200 yachts ranging from 24 to 115 feet is expected. As per previous years, racing is a combination of course racing and the traditional Saturday long distance race to the 'French side' in Marigot for more partying. Sail-World Canada has on-site coverage this year!

Ontario Sailing is now accepting nominations for this year's Ontario Sailing's Legend of Ontario Sailors Award presented by Canadian Yachting. The award recognizes outstanding contribution to the recreational and/or competitive sport of sailing in Canada.

In the words of CYA President Gerry Giffin: 'This was an evening to remember!'. The Rolex Canadian Sailor of the Year Awards Night held last Saturday in Toronto , ON was a resounding success with Fred Eaton being celebrated as the Rolex Canadian Sailor of the Year!

All the best!
