Be sure to check out the fantastic photography and video footage of this event, in this issue. Crew get busy on Transfusion and Goombay Smash - Rolex Farr 40 World Championships  Crosbie Lorimer

Cup fans can take solace in knowing that the prototype AC45 is now back up and sailing on New Zealand's Hauraki Gulf, after being repaired at Core Builders, where the boat was built. Latest news - The America's Cup winning trimaran USA 17 is home

0650 PST was the time the America's Cup winning trimaran USA 17 touched American soil again. At least that's when the mooring lines secured the M.V Star Isjford alongside San Francisco's Pier 80 with USA 17 aboard. - America's Cup 2013  Oracle Racing - copyright

The double-handed, nonstop around-the-world Barcelona World Race (BWR) has gotten a lot more interesting in recent days. Longtime race leaders Jean-Pierre Dick Loïck Peyron, aboard Virbac-Paprec 3, once enjoyed a 700+-mile lead; this has now dwindled to roughly 25 miles, thanks to a 48-hour stopover in New Zealand for repairs. Interestingly, the double Olympians, Iker Martinez and Xabi Fernandez, aboard Mapfre, are seriously stepping up their offshore game, keeping pace with two of the world's best.

Some perspective:

'Now we have had a change of wind and the maneuvers have [become] more complicated, and to keep closer to Virbac Paprec 3 we have to work a lot,' said Martinez. 'We really would like to get to the Horn and start going up and now it looks like we have favorable winds, that will allow us to go directly there.'

  Barcelona World Race ©

And from the leaders:

'From here it will be quite windy but I think we are lucky because we are between the two depressions,' said Peyron. 'It should be quick and so in four days we should be at Cape Horn. We have worked hard and made a lot of sail changes and operations to adapt to the wind changes. And on deck you get hot very quickly and then cool down quickly. So the choice is not just what sails but what clothes. We are proper fashion victims.'

Mapfre sails well and they are very serious customers. We watch their position, their speed and course, one imagines their sail combinations and their weather. The race is full of excitement, it is thrilling.'

Be sure to check out our BWR coverage in this issue.

Last Friday, in the New York Yacht Club's impeccable Model Room of their midtown Manhattan facility, Stan Honey and Anna Tunnicliffe received their coveted US SAILING Rolex Yachtsman and Yachtswoman of the Year awards. For Tunnicliffe, this is her third trip to the Model Room in as many years for this occasion. Check out the story inside.

And finally, be sure to check out Thomas Coville's report from his maxi trimaran, Sodebo, which he is currently sailing around the world, alone and nonstop, in a Jules Verne Trophy attempt. The French skipper has now reached his halfway point, but is in an all-out race against the clock, thanks in part to Stan Honey's fantastic job navigating Groupama 3 to a new record last year—a feat that earned him his gleaming new Rolex. More inside.

May the four winds blow you safely home,

David Schmidt, Sail-World USA Editor
