Welcome to Sail-World Canada
Less than a 1000 miles to go for Christophe! !
How does the expression go... If it wasn't for bad luck, this guy would have no luck at all! After hitting a whale earlier this week, Belgian Christophe Bullens is now in a no wind zone as he desperately tries to make it to Cape Town before the start of the next leg. His bad luck started even before the race was underway when his original boat was dis-masted during the delivery to France; he acquired another boat but was delayed at the start after completing his qualification passage on the new yacht. He then had to stop in the Canaries early on to make some repairs and seek medical treatment; broke a head-stay off the coast of Brazil, took on a water in the South Atlantic and collided with a marine mammal. His ordeal should be over in five days or so; it will then be a matter of another week before he has to set off again for the Southern Oceans on his way to New Zealand. I am sure the job list is long and there will be many sleepless nights in Cape Town for his shore crew.
In Dubai, Emirates Team New Zealand showcased their strength in the last Louis Vuitton Trophy event; they posted two wins against BMW Oracle Racing to capture the event, their third win in four events this past season. While it was a great victory on the water, mixed feelings were felt back on shore following the finish gun that signaled the end of 20 years of competition for the International America's Cup Class yachts. Introduced in 1990, the ACC boats that we easily associated with the America's Cup until last February had competed in five Cup events, many Louis Vuitton Cup and Louis Vuitton Trophy series. They will not likely compete again other than through demonstration events. On a positive note, Louis Vuitton took the opportunity to confirm its significant sponsorship involvement in the next America's Cup and associated challengers series.
The final event of the 2010 World Match Racing Tour is taking place in Malaysia; there are still many contenders who can walk away with the ISAF World Match Racing Championship at the 2010 Monsoon Cup. Sail-World is on site with daily reports, images and footage! Keep an eye on Ben Ainslie (Teamorigin) as the round-robin series start today.
Those of you who wish to relive the 2008 Vendée Globe will surely be interested in a new one-hour documentary 'Racing Around the World Alone'; the work of Toronto's Resolve Films Production, the film will be aired on CBC in late January but is already available on iTunes for those who can't wait. I downloaded my copy earlier this week and was very impressed with the film; it is exciting for offshore enthusiasts but remains accessible to the main stream public. Excellent work! See you soon!
