Sail-World.com has attracted a lot of flak these past few days for daring to suggest that Jessica Watson's Around the World record attempt might be technically flawed (ie. she didn't go far enough to qualify).
So consider this: if you're OD or Class racing next weekend, on an 8nm harbour course, and you cross the finish line first - but having missed out one leg of the course - have you won? Probably not.
But then you say that you have won, really, because what with all that tacking and gybing, you covered more than 8nm across the water anyway..? The polite version is that you might be laughed out of the bar.
So please read the first two stories in this newsletter.
Nobody is trying to knock Jessica Watson's achievement, but there are some of us out here who would like to see some accuracy in reporting. Mistakes are one thing, but being “economical with the truth” is another. As Bob Fisher says, “Lies, Damn Lies and PR Spin”.
Next time we cover an event, we'd like you to be entitled to believe what we are saying. We'll tell you when we think a regatta is well run, or provides close and exciting racing – but we'll also tell you if we think something doesn't really cut the mustard.
