A fresh new look coming to our Bay of Islands Sailing Week Website - and - Bay of Islands Sailing Week is now on Twitter. Sign up to @BOISailingWeek for regular updates about regatta news and preparation. During the regatta we will have lots about the racing as it happens (just for those unfortunates who aren't racing.)

This regatta the bay courses have been revised - our amazing islands are set as turning marks more often; easier for you to see the next mark, easier for us, as we don't have to lay as many buoys…

Let’s talk about our Generous Sponsors:

CRC – for Marine and boating equipment. Manufactures and markets specialty chemicals and adhesives, and has a quality product for most maintenance and repair applications. Meeting the needs of customers with high performance products has made CRC and ADOS market leaders in New Zealand.

NZ Yachting Trust – now commonly known at the NZL Yachting Trust – is an independent trust established in 1988 by well known yachtsman, the late Don St Clair Brown and Sir Tom Clark. The object is to assist in funding expenses for New Zealanders competing in Olympic and other top level international yachting competitions.

North Sails a world leader in sail making for over 50 years; their ongoing commitment is to make racing sails faster, lighter and longer-lasting - focusing on the highest standard of performance and durability. North Sails will be on hand in their marquee to ‘talk-sails’ and fulfill any service requirements.

Harken – recognised internationally furnishing top product for yachts of all sizes. They offer a Spinlock EA series of asymmetric tiller extensions for optimising performance – to offer the most comfortable driving position with a fully adjustable double handed grip. Harken is clearly seen on all our rounding buoys.

Port Opua – has generously made the Opua wharf and boat ramps available to all yachties and the general public. They welcome the yachties to Bay of Islands Sailing Week each year with many special benefits at this superb location. For info on Marina availability go to www.portopua.co.nz. To read about Far North Holdings (FNH) go to www.fnhl.co.nz

Romeyn Woodcraft – designs and manufactures unique trophies for the Bay Regatta, with the winning yacht named on each trophy. A family business established in 1973, Cees and Luke (Father and Son) work together handcrafting original designs from native NZ timber. 2013, this 11th year, will put forward more specialty prizes from Romeyn Woodcraft.

Mt Gay Rum – the yachties favourite. The place of birth was Barbados in 1703, the oldest rum in the world, an icon amongst the race sailing community worldwide. There is such a selection of this fine quality rum available at Hancocks, well worth a look at the website – well worth savouring as an after-race nip. www.hancocks.co.nz

Southern Spars - specializing in the design and construction of carbon fibre spars and components, rigging and rig servicing. Southern Spars built its first carbon spar in 1990, since then the company has pursued a passion for delivering world class cruising and racing spars, carbon rigging - and service. Passion, Design, Technology, Performance.

Volvo Ocean Race 2014-15. It’s the place where the northern and southern winds meet, where a sailing race can be won or lost in an instant. And with its complex and confusing conditions, lack of breeze, and stifling heat – it’s also a place that most sailors can’t wait to see the back of. But there is one good thing about the Doldrums. ... [more]

The Atlantic has proved to be a test for the VO65s in the Volvo Ocean Race and their teams as a battle of gybing down the west coast of Africa broke out, keeping all boats in a relatively tight-knit pack for much longer than expected. It’s the dawn of a complicated day in the Volvo Ocean Race. Let’s face it: we’re not having a very good time on Dongfeng. We lost distance last night, and our leading position. The day got dull afterwards. Sailing straight ahead, with the spinnaker up, in light winds. ... [more]

Volvo Ocean Race 2014-15, Day 10 onboard Team SCA. Two days, eight hours, thirty-four minutes, and ten seconds, nine seconds, eight, seven, six, five… over the last few days the clock has gotten louder and louder as it counts down to October 23rd at noon—the time when we cross the equator and the time when myself and six other sailors join the rest of our crew in King Neptune’s court. ... For Pablo Arrarte Elorza, the Volvo Ocean Race is a tough challenge. Not as far as physical effort is concerned because this likeable Spaniard is a very strong guy. For Pablo, the race is mostly a culinary war of attrition because the food that the team has bought with it on the race does little to please his gourmet palate. ... [more]

The 2014 RS:X Youth Worlds kicked off on October 20th in Clearwater, USA, and it was hard work from the start: in 5-6 kt of breeze, offshore to start the day and side-on to close it, pumping was in order for the 54 boys and 28 girls gathered here for the 2014 RS:X Youth World Windsurfing Championships. ... Last week the Volvo Ocean Race was all about VMG downwind sailing, with Dongfeng being the star performer. Impressive stuff. ... [more]

The battle continues for the lead in the Volvo Ocean Race, with the front running being taken up by different competitors on a regular basis. Volvo Ocean Race 2014-15. The sun’s out. It’s warm – not too hot, but warm enough for just a tee shirt. Volvo Ocean Race 2014-15, Day Nine onboard Team Alvimedica. It’s hard to explain the complexity of the weather in this part of the world. With nearly twenty hours of racing under their belts, the front runners are spreading out in the Groupama Race. The two real-time favourites, 'Crusader' and 'Keel Bill Groupama', chose options well to the east of the rest of the fleet. Astern of them, the time has come to re-organise. Meanwhile 'Opt Catch Me', less adventurous perhaps, made the smart choice of the day. ... [more]

Rolex Middle Sea Race 2014 - A hard day's night by Media Royal Malta Yacht Club
Rolex Middle Sea Race - As high pressure moved in from the north, the area around Stromboli had virtually no gradient wind and for those yachts yet to reach Stromboli, a south flowing current has slowed proceedings even further. For the competitive offshore yacht racer, performing well in light wind is more difficult than blasting through a storm at top speed. ... [more]
