Flirt wins Apollo Bay double

The 52 nautical mile race to Apollo Bay proved to be a fast but wet ride for the Melbourne fleet this morning, with Chris Dare's Corby 49 Flirt taking line honours in a time of 6 hours 17 minutes and 17 seconds, 51 minutes outside the race record.

Pre-start, Robin from Yoko was complaining of being hot and dusty and 'Nifty; from Alan Saunders Farr 47 Ninety Seven, five hours later was dripping wet and had never seen the crew’s wet weather gear so clean.

The boats started on time at 5 o’clock and had to dodge the dredging operations at the Heads. The lack of audible comments from boat to boat, as noted by Ocean Racing Mobile on the cliff top, indicated a controlled and professional start.

The race was sailed in wet conditions with north-westerly wind between 15 and 20 knots. This meant the boats had a close reach for most of the course with the last 10 miles hard on the wind. The race was made interesting as the wind was coming of the land which meant a flat sea and wind shadows from the hills. The boats that did well chose the right distance of the land and focused on trimming and steering to maximise their boat speed.

At the 9 o’clock schedule the fleet was tightly bunched so the handicap race is wide open. Flirt was leading the fleet with Rob Hanna's Rogers 46 Shogun in hot pursuit. Flirt went on to take line honours.

Next home was Shogun and then Ninety Seven and the last boat completed the course in 9 hours and 48 minutes.

With the boats finishing so close together, handicaps results where decided by seconds. Ray Borrett in his first ocean race since breaking his back in a boating accident 12 months ago had a great race winning in the AMS division, second in IRC division and second in the performance handicap division.
