Hobart yachtsman Rod Jackman celebrated the completion of his 40th Maria Island Race around the south-east coast of Tasmania early this morning by steering his father’s yacht Dr Who to a line honours victory in the 190 nautical mile which started from Hobart on Friday evening. Dr Who, a Davidson 52, broke away from the fleet late yesterday to cross the line just before halfpast twelve this morning, more than five and a half hours ahead of the next boat to finish, the Sydney 36 Creative Intention, skippered by David Rees. Creative Intention crossed the finish line off Hobart’s Castray Esplanade just at 5.07am, followed about six minutes later by Sally Rattle’s Archambault 35 Archie. Less than a minute astern of Archie came Asylum, Roy Barkas’ Sydney 38, sailing its first long ocean race. The fifth boat to finish by 7am was Host Plus, Geoff Cordell’s Mumm 36 but within sight of the finish line was Pisces, David Taylor’s Sydney 36. A number of other boats were in the river. The Maria Island Race has been a qualifier to Pisces’ participation in this year’s Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, while Creative Intention, Archie and Asylum will contest the Heemskirk Consolidated Melbourne to Hobart Race and the Rudder Cup Centenary Race across Bass Strait. Five boats have retired from the 190 nautical mile race including Aus Spray, Fruit, Natelle II, Sarina and Tahani. Corrected time results for IRC and PHS handicaps will not be announced until later today.
