Bubbly Wager - NSW IRC titles - Sail Port Stephens |
There is some healthy betting brewing between two of the Sydney boats making their way to compete in the inaugural Sail Port Stephens regatta next week – April 21 to 27. Limit, the bigger rating IRC boat, has thrown down the gauntlet to Patrice Six skipper and owner Tony Kirby, and there’s a case of champagne on offer to the winner. The bet has grown as a result of the duel earlier this year at Sailing South in Tassie, where Patrice Six only just beat the 49 footer who were the reigning champions. Rumor on the docks has it that the Patrice Six boys were happy to bet a magnum of Moet Chandon, but the Limit lads have upped the ante to a case of bubbly….whether that’s a case of Moet or Yellowglen, all will be revealed on at the conclusion of racing on Sunday 27th of April. Alan Briety’s Corby 49 Limit (previously owned by Melbourne’s Chris Dare and known as Flirt) has an impressive list of wins in their sail bag - among them, the title of the top IRC performer in Division 2 for the last 2 consecutive Rolex Trophies (2006 and 2007).
A number of Limit’s regular crew, predominately amateurs who just love sailing, will reunite in Port Stephens to enjoy the racing as well as the social calendar, with plenty on offer for yachties and their partners to enjoy. Limit’s Sailing Master, Roger Hickman, is looking forward to getting everyone fired up about the bubbly wager. 'We’ve got a healthy rivalry with Tony Kirby and the boys from Patrice Six, and I know both crews are looking forward to the windward leeward courses at Sail Port Stephens to bring out the best in all of us 'he said. Mr Kirby meanwhile, has done the maths, and figures his crew will all be well catered for in the champagne department. 'We’ve been enjoying our racing against Limit, and with our 10 man crew, what we’ll enjoy even more is a bottle of champagne each to drink at the end of the regatta, with 2 bottles left over for the drinks locker, or maybe they’ll go straight into the owner’s fridge…. !' he said. Patrice Six, a Danish designed and built X-41 one design, took the podium position at the Sailing South regatta held in Tasmania after the end of the Sydney to Hobart. She won the IRC division and the Charles E Davies Memorial Trophy with a final 5 points from placings of 1-1-2-2-1, from Limit on 9 points (5-2-1-1-5) Sail Port Stephens is a new regatta on the sailing calendar, with feeder races from Pittwater to Newcastle on Saturday 19th and Newcastle the Port Stephens on Sunday, before racing begins on Monday with the Commodores Cup, leading into the NSW IRC Offshore titles, on the Anzac Day weekend.
