Hong Kong and the best summer party frock

Kau Sai Chau, Port Shelter, Hong Hong  Guy Nowell ©
Although it wasn't a racing day, last Saturday in Hong Kong was as pretty as a picture. The sail down Port Shelter in 12kts of breeze was perfect - fetch the end of Shelter Island, tack over and close reach straight to Yau Ley, where the prawns had been practically suffocated in garlic, and the squid was properly spicy. A couple of bottles of rosé filled up the spaces in between. So the question is: why leave? When the wind is in the south, and Hong Kong puts on its very best summer party frock, this is the place to be. Not Croatia or the Whitsundays, but Hong Kong. Believe me.

It's pretty quiet on the Asian sailing scene at the moment – the Western Circuit in Singapore has raced two out of its three days (19, 20, 26 August) and the UK Sailmakers Typhoon Series in Hong Kong has just one more day's racing remaining (26 August). This is summer time, when there's a lot of absenteeism as people head off to cooler climes, and then come back to tell us that it was freezing cold in Melbourne and pouring with rain in Scotland. Serves ‘em right.

If you are looking for more small boat action, the 29er Worlds 2018 are also in Hong Kong, next January. The NOR is out there, and the entry lists are open. 29erworlds@rhkyc.org.hk Roll up, roll up.

Standing by on 72.
