Zenza NZ Women’s National Keelboat Championships 2009

The first day of the regatta, and a first for the women in the new Platu 25 fleet was held today on the Waitemata Harbour, Auckland.

The harbour was glassy as the fleet made their way to the race area, and racing was delayed until around 11am when the wind filled in and provided slightly more settled conditions for the Race Committee to set a course.

Race one provided close racing only to find out 4 boats were OCS and none of them returned – and Sally Garrett (RAYC) the first win for the day. The next couple of races were quite light, and defending Champion Jan Dawson (RNZYS) took one gun, and Jessica Smyth (RNZYS) and her Georgia Racing team had two convincing win’s.

The breeze further filled in for the last couple of races, and Robin Hilton (RAYC) scored the last two win’s of the day.

Points are stacked up very closely with no drops until 7 races, so after tonight Jan Dawson is in the lead overall, with Jess Smyth in second, and Sally Garrett in third.

Plenty of course changes made the day hard work for the committee who overall did a fantastic job, getting in 6 races before dark.

A final 4 races are scheduled for tomorrow, with prize giving to be held in the club afterwards.
