Yachting Excellence Awards- Grant Beck honoured
 2011
Singapore Airlines Sailor of the Year, Grant Beck
Grant Beck is the
most successful New Zealand Olympic Coach, ever. He has been the coach and
mentor behind the outstanding success of New Zealand windsurfing Olympians, and
many other sailors on the world stage.

Beck's
twenty five year Olympic Windsurf Coach record includes seven Olympic medals
(three of which are Gold), where he was the mastermind and confidant to Bruce
Kendall, Barbara Kendall, Aaron McIntosh and most recently, Tom Ashley.
This award won by Beck on 28 October 2011 is the premier award in New
Zealand Sailing, for outstanding contribution to yachting, and is given to
someone who has demonstrated absolute world class abilities over their career.
Yachting New Zealand in association with Singapore Airlines is pleased to
inscribe Grant Beck’s name on the Sir Bernard Fergusson Trophy as the 2011
Sailor of the Year.
Young Sailor of the Year 2011 in Association
with Orbit Travel Auckland, Peter Burling
In the past year
campaigning his 49er with crew Blair Tuke, Peter Burling has driven his way to
success by only placing outside the top four once.
His 49er results boast
an impressive record including a 1st at Sail Sydney, 1st at the NZ National
Championships, 2nd at Sail Melbourne, 4th at Perth International, the list goes
on. Burling also placed 4th at the 2011 Zhik Foiling Moth World Championships in
Australia earlier this year.
At only 20 years old, Peter Burling remains
on the NZL Sailing Team and is on his second Olympic campaign, previously the
youngest Olympic sailor to represent New Zealand in the 470 class at age 17,
Beijing 2008.
Emerging Talent Award 2011, Leonard
Takahashi-Fry
Leonard Takahashi-Fry from Murrays Bay Sailing Club
has not only won the 2011 National Optimist Championships in New Zealand, he has
also won the 2011 USA Nationals, 2011 British Nationals, and came 2nd in the
2011 Japan National Optimist Championship. .

McDavitt
Bob McDavitt, otherwise known as “Cyclone Santa” has given
outstanding service to the whole yachting community as a meteorologist. He has
been the weather man for many successful yachting campaigns including Olympics
and Americas Cup, and has voluntarily contributed to cruising safety since 1995
by issuing weekly Weathergrams for the Southern Pacific.
Yachting New Zealand President’s Award 2011, Torbay Sailing Club
for the Sir Peter Blake Regatta
When Sir Peter Blake was killed at
Macapa Brazil on 5 Dec 2001, New Zealand mourned the loss of a national hero.
Nearly ten years later, the memory of Peter Blake sails on in the biggest
regatta in New Zealand and the biggest centreboard regatta in the Southern
Hemisphere.
Torbay Sailing Club copes admirably with the demands of,
several hundred competitors each year and the infrastructure they have put in
place for this regatta is dazzling.

YNZ
are looking for another NZCT Regional Support Officer
 Yachting
New Zealand is wishing to employ a fifth NZCT Regional Support Officer to
increase the support we are able to deliver to clubs.
We are seeking
someone to work in the Northland, Auckland, Waikato/Thames areas.
This
is a key role for YNZ, providing on the ground support to clubs and sailors,
helping build club capability, growing participation and raise awareness
throughout schools and the community.
We require someone who is truly
passionate about sailing and growing the sport in New Zealand; someone who knows
yacht clubs is fresh thinking and has a creative approach to growing the sport,
is able to work with a wide variety of people (young and old) and can be the
face of Yachting New Zealand in the regions.
This role has potential to
be part or full time. The successful candidate will need to be able to work
outside of “normal working hours” as this role requires weekend and after hours
work.

Yachting New Zealand has run more than fifteen seminars and courses to train and
qualify new coaches, instructors, and race officials.
Over 200 people from
yacht clubs around the country took part in one of the training
opportunities.

at Wellington Outdoor Festival
 Yachting
New Zealand NZCT Regional Support Staff Wayne Holdt brought yachting to the
public at the Wellington Outdoor Festival on Sunday October 30th.

With help from
Sailability Wellington and YNZ’s Sailing... Have a go! programme, approximately
80 people were given their first taste of sailing.
Everybody was given a
handout with information about the member clubs of the Wellington Yachting
Association where they could join a club close to home.
On this day
approximately 60 children from Wellington region tried sailing for their first
time as part of the Sailing...Have a go! programme, and a further 20 people of
all ages and abilities had a try in the accessible sailing dinghies of
Sailability Wellington.

New Zealand coach revalidations
In 2007 we held the
first of our new coaching courses. These courses are valid for 4 years and
subsequently at the end of October everyone who did a race, regatta or
performance coach course in 2007 will need to revalidate.
The reason for
revalidation is to make sure that people are current and up to speed with new
coaching techniques. There are always lots of lessons learned and new
approaches. I have been busy out on the water with coaches from all over the
country developing resources and observing best practise. I have turned these
best practice activities into worksheets called master coach
modules.
These master coach modules will now become one of 2 ways to
revalidate for your coaching qualification.
The first option is to sit
the next coaching level course: Race coach, Regatta coach, Performance coach, or
Olympic coach.
If you don’t want to move up a coaching level i.e. you
happy coaching at your current level, you have a second option.
Your
second option is to choose a master coach worksheet to complete. There are many
options varying from; planning, video analysis, tidal analysis, wind analysis,
designing new drills etc. There is no cost for this and can be done in one of
your coaching sessions anytime thought the year. Once you have completed the
activity send it to Rob Hielkema and you will be awarded the “MasterCoach”
qualification at the same level. (If you are a race coach and complete a master
coach module you become a “master” Race coach.) This recognises your further
development.
The purpose of this style of revalidation is to keep
coaches thinking about new ways of coaching and also to develop new skills. This
research will provide resources back to me which I can share when developing
junior coaches. The idea is that we will end up with a bunch of resources and
templates of best coaching practice.

Wins 2011 Schools Teams Sailing Interdominions
 New
Zealand’s top three Teams Sailing Schools, Kerikeri, St Kentigerns and Tauranga
Boys raced at the 2011 Schools Teams Sailing Interdominions in Port Lincoln,
Australia.

Two annual teams racing trophies
were up for grabs – the Interdominions for top country overall and also a trophy
for the top individual school.
Port Lincoln was an hour’s flight from
Adelaide across the Australian Bight – a fishing and grain town of about 14,000
people. What a great venue for teams sailing; friendly helpful people with the
Yacht Club looking over a sheltered sandy bay and wind.
The council had
even dug a small channel right up to the boat ramp so you didn’t have to take
the boats far to launch. Could you imagine that at Algies Bay or
Kohimarama.
Kerikeri dominated the final race for New Zealand to retain
the Interdominion Schools Teams sailing Trophy. A great lead-in for the All
Blacks vs Australia semi final which they watched while eating dinner at the
prize giving function.
Congratulations to St Josephs for being the top
individual school. Kerikeri second , St Michael’s third on count back from
Tauranga (4th), St Kentigerns fifth , Shenton (Perth) sixth .

Fields
win leg 1- Global Ocean Race
 Shortly
after sunrise on 28 October Kiwis Ross and Campbell Field were first to arrive
in Capetown, finishing the first leg of the Global Ocean
Race.

After 32 days racing from Palma, Mallorca on their Verdier-design
Class 40 BSL, they averaged 9.3kn, getting them to the finish line with the 2nd
place boat following only 89 miles behind.
So far, only those two teams
have finished as the back four battle with weather. On board team Cessna
Citation, another kiwi, Conrad Colman is sailing with Mallorcan Hugo Ramon, they
are currently sitting in fourth place and are approximately 1000Nm from the
finish.
The Global Ocean race is a double-handed Class 40 race around
the world. This is Ross Field’s sixth circumnavigation race, but first sailed

470 duo
finalists at Harbour Sport Excellence Awards
 Jo
Aleh andBianca Barbarich-Bacher have been selected as finalists in the category
of International Performance by a Team at the 2011 Massey University Harbour
Sport Excellence Awards.
Both of these girls have also received Yachting
New Zealand Performance Awards in 2011.
Their outstanding achievements
will be recognized by Harbour Sport on Friday 18 November 2011 at the North
Harbour Stadium. The night will include a dinner and awards ceremony presented
by Geoff Dolan and Tania Dalton, along with a comedic performance by Simon
McKinney.

Mahurangi
College Regatta
 This
year, the Mahurangi College Regatta (Form 1 – 4) regatta is being held at Algies
Bay, Warkworth, on Monday November 28th.
The regatta has been held for
more than twenty years and attracts between 90 and 100 sailors each year ranging
from the novice to the expert.
Classes invited are Optimist, P Class,
Splash, Starling, Laser 4.7, Laser Radial, Techno, and 420.
The venue,
Kawau Bay, is a sheltered piece of water which makes this a good regatta for
sailors starting out on the regatta circuit.

Syman
dominates Horowhenua Cup for Paper Tigers
 Glenn
Syman (Evans Bay Yacht & Motor Boat Club) has won the first regatta in the
Paper Tiger North Island Freshwater Series in a dominate display at the
Horowhenua Cup at Lake Wairarapa over Labour weekend.

Lake Wairarapa put on zero to six knot conditions for the first
regatta of the season with the race committee lead by Paul Davies doing well to
get any races completed let alone the five that were finally finished by Sunday
afternoon (with plenty of time left before the mighty All Blacks
win!).
The regatta was again a taught fought contest as has become a
feature of the series over the years, however Glenn Syman showed his light
weather expertise by taking all five bullets during the regatta (even if one was
by less than half a metre).
The Paper Tiger North Island Freshwater
Series is regatta series held over four regattas around the North Island (Lake
Wairarapa, Lake Ngaroto, Turangi, and Taupo) during the season.
Points
are tallied at each regatta, with no drops allowed at any individual regatta
(making consistency essential). The overall series winner is calculated by
allowing each sailor to count 3 regattas from the 4 in the series.

Tony
Bouzaid 1940- 2011
 Tony
Bouzaid, former New Zealand Sailor of the Year and twice winner of the World
Half Ton Cup passed away suddenly in Auckland on 17 October.
His service
was held on Tuesday October 25 in Auckland.

Tony leaves a legacy
of great achievements as a champion yachtsman and a successful
businessman.
Tony was a key part of his father's firm, Sails and Covers -
taking that over with his brother Chris on Lou Bouzaid’s death, and expanding it
into the highly successful Hood Sails before moving into
Structureflex.
In the early 90's he moved the Great Barrier Island
running a guest house and starting major conservation programs, the most notable
being the Glenfern Sanctuary Project

Sailing
Instructors needed for Summer Camp USA
 You’ve
possibly heard about Summer Camp USA programs before. They are a huge American
tradition where children head off to a camp and have a great time learning great
new skills and activities.
Every year IEP sends Kiwi’s to the USA to
work as camp counsellors and activity instructors (or a combination of the two).
The roles involve being a leader, a role model and a friend to the kids. You
teach them new skills, celebrate their wins and are there when they are feeling
a bit low.
Basically Summer Camp USA needs people who are ready to
depart either late May or early June 2012 and can commit for 8-10 weeks at camp.
The visa itself also allows them to travel for up to 30 days after camp also.
It can be a full on job, but for enthusiastic people it’s often an
amazing life-changing experience. The great news is that Kiwis are in high
demand and one of the key areas that they are wanting to recruit for in the 2012
American Summer is Sailing counsellors.

Roberts receives the New Zealand Olympic Order
 During
the 100th anniversary of the Olympic Movement in New Zealand, Ralph Roberts
received the New Zealand Olympic Order.

presented by Jacques Rogge, President of the IOC for Ralph’s outstanding
services to the Olympic Movement in New Zealand.
It is an honour for
Ralph Roberts, Yachting, the Olympic Movement, and Takapuna Boating Club.

Antifoul
to be reassessed by EPA - recommendations invited
The Environmental
Protection Authority (EPA) has decided that there are sufficient grounds to
carry out a reassessment of all active ingredients approved for use in
antifouling paints in New Zealand, and invites people that have a considered
view on the issue to make a recommendation for submission to be made on.
Antifouling paints are commonly used to reduce the build-up of plants,
algae and microorganisms on surfaces submerged in water, such as the hulls of
boats.
In the last decade many international regulatory bodies have banned or
severely restricted the use of certain active ingredients used in antifouling
paints.
A reassessment is a second look at an already approved
substance, or group of substances. This reassessment may result in changing the
controls on some of the approved substances, or in some cases, withdrawing the
approval. The EPA has initially prioritised the active ingredients in the
reassessment, in order of the likely level of risk they pose to human health and
the environment.

Anyone can apply for a reassessment
including members of the public, the Chief Executive of the Environmental
Protection Agency or other Government agencies. In this case, the reassessment
has been initiated by the Chief Executive of the EPA.
The EPA is
currently in the process of preparing the reassessment application. Early
consultation with interested parties and industry is vital at this stage and
they are particularly interested in receiving feedback from manufacturers and
users of antifouling paint, as well as those that monitor its use. Stakeholder
input will help the EPA to incorporate real life scenarios in our analyses. Lack
of information may lead to worst case/precautionary assumptions being used in
the risk assessment.

In preparation for the reassessment the EPA commissioned the
National Institute for Water and Atmospheric Research to evaluate the OECD
Emission Scenario Document (ESD) for antifouling paints, for a range of ports
and marinas. The report identified appropriate New Zealand-specific scenarios to
be used in the environmental exposure modelling as part of this
reassessment.
Once the necessary information is collected and assessed,
the application will be then drafted, and the Application, which sets out
preliminary recommendations and invites formal submissions, will be
notified.
