Yacht Club Survey The 2011 Yacht Club Survey is currently with Clubs for
completion - only one completed survey from each Yacht Club is required and
it’s due back before 20 May 2011.
A full list of
affiliated Yacht Clubs noting those who have already completed and returned the
Survey can be viewed on the YNZ website.
We know it takes a
little time and effort, (hopefully not too much) and we really appreciate your
help and cooperation.
YNZ has been conducting the survey since 1999 and
it allows us to monitor overall Club membership throughout New Zealand and also
to get an idea of whether you think we’re doing a good job, and where we can do
better.
The YNZ website has a link to the on-line survey, tips on completing it, and a pdf
copy of the survey which can be downloaded and printed.
Tragic
Loss: Geoff SmaleThe nation and in particular the yachting community was
recently rocked by the news of the death of Geoff Smale in an air accident.
Geoff represented New Zealand at the 1968 Mexico City Olympic Games
where he sailed the Flying Dutchman with Ralph Roberts finishing 8th.
Yachting New Zealand expresses its deepest condolences to Geoff’s family
and friends.

compiled this tribute to Geoff Smale and goes into detail on his great
achievements in yachting.

Have a Go! nationwide tour with Camper New Zealand flagged Volvo Ocean Race entry CAMPER hit the
water last week and is set to go on a tour of the nation with five stopovers
along the way.

Zealand’s Sailing… Have a Go! Trailer will be at each stopover port where young
local sailors between 8 and 12 years have been invited to come down and get out
on the water for a fun sail while the crew of the bright red and white Volvo
boat watches on.
If you would like to take part in your port and have
the chance to go on board while Camper is docked and then have your name put
into the draw to win the coveted prize of a sail on board the new boat.
If you are between 8 and 12 years and would like to take part in the fun

Sailing Team prepare for Hyeres Regatta  Hyeres,
France will soon play host to the world’s best Olympic class sailors including a
large kiwi team for the fourth ISAF Sailing World Cup Regatta for the 2010-2011
season. The regatta is known as Semaine Olympique Francaise (or French Olympic
Sailing Week) and racing runs over six days from April 24th – 29th.
Coming off the back of a three medal haul at the last ISAF Sailing World
Cup Regatta in Palma de Mallorca Spain, the NZL Sailing Team will be looking for
another strong performance. All who competed in Spain will start again in
Hyeres, France and will be joined by more kiwi representatives in the Women’s
RS:X and Laser Radial fleets.

NZL Yachting Trust Youth Team namedYachting New Zealand is pleased to
announce the NZL Yachting Trust Youth Team for 2011.
Twelve sailors will
represent New Zealand at the prestigious ISAF Youth Sailing World Championships
to be staged in Zadar, Croatia between 7th and 16th July this year.

The 2011 team
includes some familiar names with three members, including Molly Meech, Georgia
Schofield and Logan Dunning-Beck, already having Youth World Championships
experience under their belt having competed in Istanbul, Turkey in 2010.
New Zealand has a proud history of success at the ISAF Youth Worlds
which dates back to 1971. Over the history of the event kiwis have returned home
with a total of 42 medals including 15 Gold, 15 Silver and 12 Bronze, and this
year’s team will be looking to increase that tally.
In preparation for
the regatta the team will be involved in a busy schedule of training camps,
domestic and international competition.

Our
Youth Team sailors compete in Great Britain  Four members of the 2011 NZL Yachting Trust Youth Team (see
above) have just competed in the RYA Volvo Youth Nationals at Hayling Island in the UK honing
their skills in large and highly competitive fleets.
2011 is the first
year in which international sailors have lined up at the RYA Volvo Youth
Nationals, and GBR’s team for Croatia will be selected based on results at this
regatta.
The kiwi girls in particular have come away with promising
results.

championships are great apart from the lousy weather! The UK windsurfers are all
really good and it is great for us to race against bigger fleets in a variety of

2011
Opti Nats attracts record numbers Wakatere
Boating Club is eagerly anticipating welcoming over 300 young Optimist sailors
to Auckland’s North Shore for the 2011 Toyota Optimist
National Championships.
Racing runs over Easter from 21st
– 25th April – full details are on the regatta website.
With 310 entries so far (late
entries still being accepted) this will be the second largest centerboard
regatta in New Zealand behind the Sir Peter Blake Memorial Regatta where
multiple classes compete.
In previous years an entry list of around 240
sailors was achieved rising to 284 in 2010 – making 2011 the largest Optimist
National Champs ever. Interest is heightened with the world’s best coming to New
Zealand in just eight months time for the 2012 Optimist World Champs in Napier.
200 are entered for Open fleet racing with another 110 entered in green
fleet. All Christchurch sailors coming north for the regatta get free entry.

New
Zealand Secondary Schools Teams RacingThis preview from Kirsty Short...
 Sandspit Yacht Club and the New Zealand Team Sailing
Association are gearing up for the Secondary School Team Sailing Nationals.
The event will be held at Algies Bay from April 26th to 30th, and will
be attended by 28 teams (209 sailors in total) representing schools all the way
from Kerikeri to Wanaka.

Nine South Island teams are attending, and there will be eight
all-girl teams. Competition for the girl's trophy is expected to be intense this
year, with Westlake, New Plymouth, Napier, Marlborough and Nelson all fielding
strong teams.
Among the open teams there is also plenty of competition.
Last year's gold medallists Kerikeri High School, who won the recent Northland
regional competition, are always high achievers. Kerikeri are coached by NZTSA
president and elder statesman of Team Sailing, Derry Godbert.
Other
regional winners are St Kentigern College (Auckland), Lindisfarne College (Lower
North), and relative newcomers Timaru Boys, who won both the Upper South Island
and Lower South Island regional competitions. 2010 silver medallists Tauranga
Boys under coach Richard Burling are also likely to perform well.
Teams
will be seeded into three fleets based on previous results, with opportunities
to progress during the event.
The Team Sailing format, with short
tactical races sailed in 420 dinghies, provides plenty of action for both
competitors and spectators, and is popular with both novice and top-ranked
sailors. To add interest this year, the annual NZ versus Australia
"Interdominion" competition is being held in South Australia, with the top three
teams invited to compete. South Australia will also host a regatta for the top
three girls teams from each country.
Team Sailing is particularly
demanding on umpires and officials, and we are very fortunate to have the
assistance of Yachting New Zealand to bring top Australian Team Sailing umpire
Noel Allen here to facilitate an umpiring course on April 25th.

Disabled
Sailors … Have a Go! Sir Murray Halberg believes “Every New Zealander, no matter
what their ability, has the right to participate in the sport or active
recreation in pursuit of their choice – there are no exceptions”.
This
aligns well with Sir Peter Blake’s idea and desire that all children should have
an opportunity to experience the thrills and spills of sailing.
Halberg
Trust and Yachting New Zealand team up to make this happen.In term one, disabled
students from the Taranaki and Wellington regions have had the opportunity to
experience sailing via the Yachting New Zealand Sailing…Have a Go! schools
programme. The programme ran sessions for two days in each region.
The
Halberg Trust Activity Funding supported schools by covering the cost for more
than thirty disabled students to participate in the Sailing…Have a Go!
programme.
Craig Ryburn, YNZ Sailing…Have a Go! instructor ensured that
all students gained water confidence, sailed optimists dinghies independently or
as a pair, as well as offering a shared experience on the WETA
trimaran.
Trish Tennant of Paremata school thanks the instructor and the
club volunteers,”who were brilliant” Trish says “please, please do it again, it
was great. Two parents are following up about further yachting”.
Yachting
clubs supported Craig by providing use of their club facilities, a coach boat
and volunteers. Volunteers were representatives of the Heretaunga Boating Club,
a dual representation of Evans Bay Yacht and Motor Boat Club and Sailability
Wellington, the Taranaki region was represented by volunteers of the New
Plymouth Yachting Club.
I would like to extend my thanks to the yacht
club volunteers for donating their time, and I wish to acknowledge the Eagles
Golfing Society for their ongoing fundraising efforts which allow the Activity
Fund to directly benefit our disabled youth’s participation in opportunities
such as the YNZ Sailing…Have a Go! programme.

turn out for Last Shake Regatta  54 boats turned out at Naval Point Club Lyttelton for the
Last Shake Regatta on the weekend of April 9th and 10th.
All Canterbury
Club sailors were invited to take part. Yachting New Zealand was proud to
support the regatta enabling reduced entry fees with a view to providing a
sailing opportunity for those in post-Quake Christchurch.
Incorporating
the Canterbury Keelboat Championship for the Presidents Cup, the Young 88 South
Island Championship and the Trailer Yacht South Island Championship (including
the Farr NZ Championships and the N22 South Island Championship) the Club opened
the regatta up for dinghy sailors and team sailors as well.
“A big vote
of thanks to the team of volunteers who made it all happen,” says Ken Camp, Club
Secretary.
Warm conditions, on Saturday in particular, greeted sailors
and a full schedule of racing was run, as well as a social function with a band
on the Saturday evening.

Flash
Gordon takes Young 88 Nationals  The Harken Young 88 National Championships, hosted by the
RNZYS attracted a fleet of 22 boats on what was a blustery and wet Auckland
weekend.
A total of eight races were sailed – four on Saturday in 20+
knots on a course set off Northern leading light, and another four on Sunday off
Takapuna in 15 to 20 knots.
Heavy rain all day Saturday made for poor
visibility and challenging sailing conditions but it didn’t dampen the fight for
the title which came down to a two way tangle between Flash Gordon, helmed by
Will Tiller, and Raging Hormones with Jim Maloney at the helm.
Flash
Gordon took the Championship sealing the deal in the final race with a win,
Raging Hormones suffering gear damage and required to settle for second place
overall. On board the winning boat with Tiller were Richard Bouzaid and Mike
Sanderson among others.

Classic
Racing Yacht to Retrace Winning Voyages  The 106 year old, 34 foot keel yacht Wairiki, one of the
fleet of racers from Archibald Logan’s drawing board, will relive her glory days
in the Easter weekend Auckland-Tauranga race which she first competed in back in
1923.
The recently restored classic keeler notched up a formidable racing
record as one of the fastest in her class in her day, coming first on handicap
in the Auckland-Tauranga Ocean Race in 1926, 1928 and 1930, second on handicap
in 1923 and 1925 and third on handicap in 1927.
But in 2011 Wairiki
will be an unofficial competitor when she appears on the start line in the
International Paints Auckland Tauranga Race on Thursday, 21 April with a racing
fleet made up of some of today’s fastest, high tech models like Team Vodafone’s
flying trimaran, the fastest sailing boat in the southern
hemisphere.
“Wairiki will set an elegant pace of around 6 knots, versus
the trimaran’s 25 knots plus, and we expect to be the last to arrive at the
Tauranga Yacht and Power Boat Club marina on Friday, 22 April after setting sail
the previous day from the Westhaven Tower at Westhaven,” says skipper, Jason
Prew who has been a key member of the restoration team of this now Auckland
based classic keeler.
Wairiki joins a formidable line-up of classic
yachts from the Logan stable already restored, including Jessie Logan, Waitangi,
Thelma, Rainbow and Rawene.

A
Celebration of Sailing: Hebtro Trophy A fantastic Hebtro Trophy took place at Worser Bay Boating
Club on 3rd April 2011.
The Dickson family attended en masse, Dad - Roy
Dickson talked about his love of sailing and son - Chris related a neat story
about sailing with Dad on the Hauraki Gulf.
2011 was the 20th
anniversary of this children’s sailing fundraiser and it was great to have the
Mayor attend and give a short talk at the briefing. Organisers were pleased to
have Daryl Wislang attend from the Camper Team which is being run by Emirates
Team New Zealand for the Volvo Ocean Race. Darryl is a WBBC member who is now
in demand as a top international yachtsman.
The Commodore of WBBC,
Andrew Paterson said “I met a bunch of really interesting club members and RPNYC
people I had not met before; the fellowship of the Hebtro day was happening all
around me! Old friends and new friends. It was great to see “Christo” (Barry
Christopherson) and Pam”. Barry reintroduced the modern Hebtro Trophy 20 years
ago.
The wealth of celebrity yachties added particular “mana” to the
event.
The format of the race is for the RPNYC keelers to sail right off
Worser Bay Boating Club making a fine spectacle. The racing started as a mark
foy where the speed challenged boats start first. If the handicapper has his
sums right then all boats finish together.
After marrying up boats to
sponsors and young sailors the racing commenced. Chris Dickson knows the value
of time and had generously bought an extra minute to reduce Drinks Trolley’s
handicap in the reverse auction.
Everybody came ashore really pumped,
with tall stories of wild rides and excitement. The youngsters in the Elliot 6
showed what regular sailing in the Wellington Youth Scheme can achieve and put
the wind up the celebrity boat only being overtaken on the last leg.
In
a fairytale ending, that exhibited the art of the handicapper, Chris Dickson
skippering Drinks Trolley narrowly won the Hebtro Trophy with Roy Dickson second
on Andiamo (after Nedax was disqualified for flying their spinnaker).
A
team shirt from “Rainbow II” was presented by Roy Dickson for sale at the
celebrity auction. In 1969 six young Kiwi sailors and their Sparkman and
Stevens designed 'one tonner' “Rainbow II” won the internationally prized, One
Ton Cup off Heligoland. The team shirt was bought by a club member and presented
to WBBC for display.
The auction contained many items of unique
provenance including champagne from the 2000 Loius Vuitton Cup in Auckland.
John Ashby provided many laughs with his unorthodox auctioneering style and
managed to remain dishonest even with Ted Jewett’s professional advice from the
floor.
A rousing rendition of the WBBC Anthem –sail until I sail no more
– closed proceedings.
WBBC would like to give a big thank you to RPNYC
for supporting the fundraiser and a huge hoorah for all of the wonderful
sponsors. Between the auction and the sponsors more than $17,500 was raised
for the kids learn to sail and development programs next year.
Sailing
and Art Deco combined Napier
Sailing Club will, as you know, be hosting the Optimist World Championships in
early 2012 and this will involve a major commitment from club members.
A
couple of weeks after that event the Napier Sailing Club intends to host a fun
race centred around the very popular Art Deco Weekend (16th – 19th Feb).
“It will take the form of a Mark Foy race around the port and along
Marine Parade and return on Saturday 18th,” explains Clive Snow from the Napier
Sailing Club. “The programme will commence with Tiffin at 1130 and followed by
‘The Chase’ with the slowest/oldest competitor away at 1300. The after race
function will be a ‘Rum Do’.”
“A separate section will be held for motor
cruisers of a ‘certain age’ who can compete in the speed event or the fishing
competition.”
“We would like to highlight the event to older classes –
Idle Alongs, Zeddies, Gaffers etc. but all entries will be welcomed.”
If
you think this sailing event, to be run at the same time as Napier’s Art Deco
Weekend, sounds like fun – put a note in your diary or on the calendar now and
watch out for the NOR to be released later in the year.

offers Advanced Sea Survival in MayRoyal Akarana Yacht Club is offering the
Advanced Sea Survival Course on 7th and 8th of May and invites anyone interest
to get in touch and book in.
Advanced Sea Survival is a comprehensive
course covering all aspect of safety at sea and is a Coastguard recognised
course valid for five years. It includes a liferaft drill in a pool on Sunday
morning.
If you have previsouly completed Advanced Sea Survival but your
certificate has expired RAYC is offering a refresher on Sunday 8th May which
includes the liferaft exercise.

shortly arrive at the finish line of the Barcelona
World Race after sailing two-handed around the globe.

reported in over the weekend as they approached the fickle and challenging
Gibraltar Straights…

“We are currently 400 miles
from the entrance [to the Gibraltar Straights] sailing upwind in a light North
easterly driven by the Levante. It seems incredible in such a long race where
you can choose your course through any system that we are, in the final stages,
dictated to in such a definite way.
“The straits of Gibraltar, a
geographical feature dating back beyond biblical times. Shadowed by the pillars
of Hercules, ‘The Rock of Gibraltar’ on the European side and Monte Hacho in
Morocco. These great columns present a wind funnel like no other with the two
prevailing breezes being the Levante, a strong easterly flow, and the Poniente
which is an equally strong westerly flow.
“Such is the restriction at the
bottle-neck, the effects of these flows can spread for hundreds of miles in
either direction.
“A recent message from the Chairman of the organizing
committee said the consensus was that “the door to the Med was only half open”.
Our Oasis is within reach so we push on, still focused on doing a good job until
the finish.
“Being only 800 miles from the finish and due around Easter
we are naturally thinking of what’s in store for us, people to contact, articles
to write, interviews to give and plans for future projects. A New Zealand
Vendee Globe or Barcelona World race project? There’s an idea, we have won
every other major trophy in the sport except for the short-handed sailing.
Sounds like a good focus for this new found energy.”
Russell
Coutts to present in OrewaA presentation by four time winner of the
Americas Cup and Olympic gold medallist Russell Coutts is planned for Wednesday
25th May at 8pm at the Orewa College Auditorium in Orewa.
Tickets are
$30 and proceeds will go towards the restoration of local heritage building –
the St Stephen’s Chapel, Whangaparoa. The planned format is a video, talk by
Russell on the America’s Cup, followed by an open Q & A session with an
expected time frame of up to two hours.
Tickets are strictly limited and
will be sold on a first-come basis. Entry is by ticket only. Tickets are
