Briefings - 13 July 2011

IN THIS ISSUE:

YNZ NEWS

New Learn to Sail resources have arrived!

Yachting New Zealand has published a new Dinghy Learn to Sail syllabus to replace the old Learn to Sail Log Book.

The new syllabus is in two levels; Start... Sailing! (Learn to Sail 1) where sailors learn the basics, and Sailing... Fast! (Learn to Sail 2) where sailors improve on new found skills and become faster sailors.

This new syllabus is a big step up. It has lots of information on not just Optis but windsurfers, two handed boats and accessible classes such as the Access Dinghy. The book has great diagrams, illustrations and photos; it includes ideas for games and exercises and a notes section for coaches. It is also in COLOUR!

Clubs and other affiliated organisations can order the books in exactly the same way you did with the old books, the cost is $14 and the pack includes the book, a colour certificate for each level and a wall chart.

Keep an eye out for more resources to help run the programme including a programme management/tracking spreadsheet and drill/exercise templates. More information to come soon.

We are currently producing Go... Racing! (Learn to Sail 3) the next step in the Learn to Sail programme, a learn to race syllabus to follow on from Level 2. We expect to have this available to clubs in September.

Nomination time: Yachting Excellence Awards

Nominations are now open for the 2011 Yachting New Zealand Excellence Awards. In 2010 the Award categories and criteria were given a fresh look, so as a reminder here are some key things to consider when making a nomination.

The Yachting New Zealand Regulations Part 2 which relate to the Awards should be read in full when making a nomination. Please download them from the website and take a look through. There you will also find the official nomination form.

Up to ten Performance Awards and up to ten Service Awards will be presented annually and it is very important to consider your nomination carefully and to provide the best supporting information possible. No doubt the Judging Panel will have some tough decisions to make!

A nomination can be made by any Yachting New Zealand affiliated Yacht Club or Class Association or any member thereof.  Nominations will not be accepted without an accompanying digital photograph of the nominee of at least 200KB. On the water, portrait, action or otherwise is fine – but make sure you send us at least one photo.

Nominees in all categories will be considered by the judging panel for the major prize – the Sir Bernard Fergusson Trophy for Sailor of the Year, which will be announced and presented on the night.

Find more information on the Award categories and the nomination form here. Nominations close on September 1st 2011. Please contact Beth Orton, Event Manager for 2011 with any questions relating to the Yachting Excellence Awards. reception@yachtingnz.org.nz

Barbara Kendall on her IOC Appointment

New Zealand board sailing queen, Barbara Kendall is one of three new members elected to the Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee. (IOC)  Barbara’s appointment was announced at the recent 123rd IOC Session.

She explains what it means...

Q:  What does being a member of the IOC involve?
BK
: A lot of travelling! At the moment I sit on three commissions – the Athletes, Woman’s and Sports and the Environment Commissions. Also once a year there is a session where all the members meet and important decisions are made on what sports will be on the Olympic Program, where the Olympics will be hosted in the future, and much more. There are only 115 members in the world and 15 of us are athletes.

Q:  What does it mean to you to be elected to this important position?
BK:
This is an amazing opportunity to be involved in Olympic sports at the highest level where I can influence decisions and change if needed. I now have a unique opportunity to meet face to face with our world sporting leaders.

Q: Is there anything in particular you want to work towards while in the position?
BK:
My heart is with the athletes.
My passion is with the athletes Career Program which is all about empowering athletes for their future. To make them aware that sport is an amazing vehicle for life opportunities that can help them in their future. Also the life skills you use in your sporting career are so valuable for future endeavours.

Communication between administrators and sports people is poor - this needs to be improved through the awareness of athlete’s commissions. Doping - zero tolerance and the continuing education.

And our Oceania Island Athletes - it would be fantastic to get their athletes to Olympic qualifying standards. There is a lot of work to be done here and it needs to begin with competent administrators and coaches.

HIGH PERFORMANCE & INTERNATIONAL

Bibs presented to Pre-Olympic Team in front of media
Sailors named by Yachting New Zealand to compete in next month’s Pre-Olympics – officially the Weymouth and Portland International Regatta 2011 – gathered together earlier this month to meet the media.

Image Richard Gladwell Sail-World.com: Jo Aleh and Olivia Powrie receive their bibs

Sailors were presented their competition bibs by Maersk Line General Manager Julian Beavis at the gathering held in the fitting setting provided by Voyager – National Maritime Museum.

Almost the entire team of sailors (with the exception of Star crew Craig Monk) as well as coaches and support crew were at Voyager and media interest was high.

Racing starts around three weeks from now in Weymouth, UK with the New Zealand team travelling north to gather at the venue later this month. This regatta mimics the race format and fleet sizes of the actual Olympic Games exactly one year out and as such provides a great opportunity for the New Zealand team to fine-tune their planning and preparation.

New Zealand at the IFDS Worlds
Medals were decided last week at the IFDS World Championships 2011 sailed in Weymouth, UK following on from the Olympic class Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta 2011.

Three New Zealand entries competed at the World Championship Regatta which features the same events sailed in the Paralympic Games – the SKUD18, the 2.4 metre and the Sonar.

Sailing in the two-handed SKUD class, Tim Dempsey and Jan Apel (pictured left) finished tenth overall in the fleet of 21 boats.

Paul Francis and Joshua McKenzie-Brown both represented New Zealand in the single-handed 2.4metre event finishing 12th and 30th respectively up against a total fleet of 45
ETNZ snatch victory in Boston Extreme 40 Regatta
Emirates Team New Zealand snatched the overall lead of the Boston round of the Extreme Sailing Series from Artemis on the last leg of the last race.

Going in to the last race they were eight points adrift of the overnight leader and Dean Barker, James Dagg, Jeremy Lomas and Adam Beashel needed to put five places between them and the Swedes.

They managed six. Artemis did not have a good race and finished eighth and Emirates Team New Zealand took the opportunities that came their way and kept out of trouble to finish second.

With double points on the table, Barker collected 20 and Artemis eight. After 37 races over five stressful days, Emirates Team New Zealand moved to the top of the leader board on 293 points, followed by Artemis 289, The Wave Muscat 269, Luna Rossa 264 and Groupe Edmond de Rothschild 260.

The win, also propelled the team to the 2011 series leader with 39 points, with Artemis  second on 37 and Groupe Edmond de Rothschild on 36.

The last race was not at all straight forward. The breeze was light and fluky, with puffs that could change a yachts fortune’s in seconds. As Dean Barker remembers it, twice they fell into windless holes and watched Artemis advance. Twice they sailed themselves out of a difficult situations.

Barker said: “We were realistic about the odds of Artemis having a bad race, but eight points in a double points race is achievable.

“No matter how well or how poorly you’re sailing in these regattas, - you gain some ground and you lose some - but there are always opportunities.”
Aon Racing second in OM Match Race Cup
New Zealand match race team Aon Racingreport in earlier this month after a second place finish at OM Match Race Cup in Italy...

“After a fantastic regatta Aon Racing stumbled at the final hurdle, going down 3-1 to Denmark's Mads Ebler in the finals.

“The team lead at times in several of the lost races, however we struggled to read the slightly steadier breeze and build up a comfortable lead. In the last race of the finals we were soundly beaten on the start line and although we managed to catch up, we were unable to pass Mads, giving him his third win and the regatta.

“Although we came up just short, the team is still really pleased with how we are sailing, with good boat speed and solid tactics usually a feature of our races.

“There is now a significant break in the match racing schedule, with the next regatta being a Grade 1 in Pornichet, France. In the meantime the team is competing in the Tour De France a la Voile, which is a set of inshore regattas and coastal races that goes right around France (like the bike race but in boats).”

Aon Racing: Reuben Corbett (Skipper), Adrian Short (Main) & Tom Bentham (Bow)
Jo and Polly update
Team Jolly - NZL Sailing Team's Women's 470 sailors Jo Aleh and Polly Powrie - have been back in New Zealand for a few weeks and head back to Weymouth at the end of next week. They update with a preview of what is to come...

"It has been rather wintery here in New Zealand we seem to be in the longest windy storm-like weather system I can remember for a long time - eight days and counting - with the breeze a little strong even for us. But we have still managed to get some good training in - see above - it has not all been exactly pleasant.

"So next is the Pre-Olympics, with the team announcement a couple of weeks ago, we are all set to go and have another crack at Weymouth, where hopefully summer has arrived!!

"The regatta begins on the 1st of August, but us 470's do not start racing until the 5th, where we have a rather long and drawn out event, with two lay days (basically a spare day, where they can catch up on racing if we are behind schedule, but most often a strange rest day in the middle of the regatta).

"We do not finish the event until the 12th, after which we will have a rather rushed pack up (as most other classes will have been finished for a few days, and already packed up) as we have to get all of our gear into a container and heading for Perth, for the ISAF Worlds in December... Sailing a 470 really is a logistical nightmare!!

"So just over a week and a half left of training, with as usual, plenty to tick off... and hopefully a little less wind! And for the record, winter training really not all it’s cracked up to be!"

Thank you all for your support
Jo and Polly, Team Jolly

A special thank you to our coaches who have been braving the cold with us - Nathan Handley and Andrew Brown, you guys are awesome!!
Koru Match update...
Women’s match race crew, Koru Matchupdate us after Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta...

The Sail for Gold Regatta (SFG) in early June, held in Weymouth – UK, went from bad to worse for the girls. Unfortunately the team didn’t hit the event with a “bang” and struggled to find their feet throughout the competition.

The team was disappointed with their dismal finish of 19th.  This result meant that Koru Match did not reach the performance standard required to be selected as part of the team at this year’s Olympic Test Event in Weymouth.

The team opted out of the last ISAF Sailing World Cup event in Kiel, Germany to do some training against the Finnish.

After what seems like a month of hard knocks, the team remains positive and determined. The girls have chosen to keep the big picture in mind and are happy with their overall progress during the European Tour, “We remain focussed on our ultimate goal of being selected to attend the 2012 Olympic Games and being medal contenders a little over twelve months from now. There are many team strengths and it’s just a matter of putting it all together,” says the team.

Koru Match are disappointed with their result at SFG and know that they are capable of more, as their Miami (7th overall - 6th country) and Palma (5th overall - 4th country) results show. The team is focusing on a solid result at the ISAF World Championships in Perth – Australia in December 2011, which is the first Olympic qualification event. The team will continue to train in Europe till August. From there it will be back to New Zealand to put some solid hours into the gym and on the water.

Koru Match: Stephanie Hazard (Helm), Jenna Hansen (Trim) and Susannah Pyatt (Bow)

JUNIOR AND YOUTH SAILING

Youth Team head into business end at Youth Worlds
The 2011 NZL Yachting Trust Youth Team is set to resume competition tonight at the 41st Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship 2011 on in Zadar, Croatia.

The prestigious youth regatta is now past the halfway mark with three days of racing remaining in the schedule before the medals are decided.

Tomer Simhony and Ellie Copeland are the best placed the NZL Yachting Trust Youth Team holding onto second place in the SL16 multihull class, however the points gap to the Brazilians in the lead has widened and their margin over the chasing pack has diminished.

An eighth and a seventh came from the kiwis on day three and the Danish representatives have caught them after returning two good races tying them up on 26 points each. There is a massive 20 point gap to the leaders who have been dominant.

Belgium and Spain are close behind in fourth and fifth on the SL16 leader-board on 27 and 28 points respectively, ensuring that the second half of the series will require consistently good race results from the kiwis to secure a podium finish.

Jack Simpson and Logan Dunning-Beck in the 29er class are the next best placed of the New Zealanders however after racing on day three they slipped one spot from third overall back to fourth position. Similar to the multihull event the points are tight for those in the hunt for the medals and the kiwis are just one point off the Americans in third place, while the Aussies are chasing hard just two points behind.

While most of the sailors in Zadar enjoyed a rest day overnight both RS:X fleets were on the water trying to make up for racing lost due to light winds over the first three days of the event.

Georgia Schofield is now in seventh place after an 11th and an eighth overnight, while Sven Pedersen, representing New Zealand in the boy’s RS:X is in 14th place overall.

This prestigious youth regatta has attracted a total of 349 sailors from 52 countries to the city of Zadar, in Croatia on the Adriatic Sea. The regatta schedule includes six race days and one reserve day (Tuesday 12th July) with a total of twelve races possible in each of the ten classes if conditions are favourable.

Racing resumes tonight and medals will be decided on the final day of competition, Friday 15th July, in Zadar.

See the regatta website for full results, photos and more and you can follow theNZL Yachting Trust Youth Team on Facebook.
38 nations already entered for Napier OptiWorlds
Six months from now the world’s best Optimist sailors will descend upon Napier, New Zealand set to play host to the 2011 Optimist World Championships and already 38 nations have confirmed their entry.

“We are hoping for 50 countries to be entered by the start of the regatta but it is hard to get a read on it,” explains Pete Dawson from the Regatta Organising Team. “Some big sailing countries like China, Thailand and Malaysia are yet to enter but we’re very pleased to see the likes of India coming with a full complement of five sailors.”

The list of nation’s entered so far show that the great majority will bring a full team of five sailors to compete in the world’s most prestigious junior regatta and do battle for the World Championship crown.

The 2011 OptiWorlds is expected to attract 400 competitors and team officials to Napier. The main event, which will be the biggest international yachting event for a single class ever hosted in New Zealand, runs from December 30th – January 10th and is preceded by an Invitational Pre-Worlds Regatta.
Four strong kiwi team enjoy Opti Europeans in Portugal
A team of four kiwis has just competed at the2011 European Optimist Championshipsstaged in Tavira, Portugal between 2 – 10 July.

Conditions were great and a full schedule of twelve races was possible for over 200 junior sailors from around the world who travelled to Portugal to compete for the Girl’s and Boy’s 2011 European Optimist Champion crowns.

The New Zealand team included...

Lola Stoodley – 21st girl’s fleet
Nick Egnot-Johnson – 33rd boy’s fleet
Cole Rippey – 63rd boy’s fleet
