Semaine Olympique Francaise
 Nine New Zealand sailors are in Hyeres, France for the 41st edition of the Semaine Olympique Française (SOF). Joining sailors from over 50 nations the kiwis are competing in the fourth of seven regattas that make up the ISAF Sailing World Cup.
Climbing overnight into 6th place, Josh Junior from Worser Bay Boating Club, Wellington is the best placed of seven kiwi sailors in the 140 strong Laser fleet. Having sailed six races so far the regatta is now at the halfway stage with another two days of racing before the top ten medal race on Friday.
In the last five races sailed Junior hasn’t finished outside the top six, recording a race win on day two of the six day regatta. Points on the leaderboard are close and the young Wellingtonian who was 5th in both of two races sailed overnight, is just three points behind the Croatian sailor lying second overall.
Sara Winther is the next best placed of the kiwi team in Hyeres, France lying 13th in the Laser Radial class.

Silver medal for Bullot at major European regatta
Next to world championships and Olympic medals, a podium finish at The Princess Sofia Mapfre Trophy in Palma, Spain, is one of the most coveted achievements for Olympic level sailors.
25-year old Aucklander Mike Bullot earned a silver medal in the Laser class at the recent regatta which concluded on April 10th. In a fleet of 134 boats he secured five top ten finishes and 64 points, placing him just six points behind the GBR victor Nick Thompson, and five points ahead of the third placegetter Stipanovic Tonci of Croatia.
An intense battle took place in the Medal Race staging the best top ten sailors in each class against each other, for double points. After a slow start Mike, who placed fifth in the 2008 Laser World Championships, and second in the Sail Melbourne Regatta last December, fought hard and ultimately placed third in this race, and secured the silver medal.
In final standings Mike's teammate Josh Junior finished in eleventh, and Andy Maloney 23rd.
Sara Winther finished up 13th in the Laser Radial class, and Justine Sellars placed 18th in the women's RS:X boardsailing division that Barbara Kendall won at this event in 2007.

Youth Worlds’ Firsts
ISAF reports that entries in for the 2009 Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championships indicate that this year’s event will be a record breaker. Already 59 nations and 280 sailors are entered to compete in the hotly contested event this year being sailed in July in Buzios, Brazil.
The NZL Yachting Trust Youth Team for 2009 which will represent New Zealand at this year’s Worlds was announced last month and includes ten of this country’s finest youth sailors. Click here to read more about our team.
The 39th edition of the Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship is the first to visit South America and the host city of Armação de Buzios is gearing up for a huge entry of top youth sailors from right around the world. The championship which runs from 9-18 July, is part of a sailing-packed year in the Rio de Janeiro state, which also played host to the Volvo Ocean Race.
Buzios has already set one new record, as the first edition of the championship to exceed 50 entries in one event. The Boy’s One Person Dinghy – Laser Radial event has attracted entries from 51 nations, which will make it the biggest fleet ever in the 39-year history of the Youth Worlds.
The 2009 NZL Yachting Trust Youth Team is supported by the NZL Yachting Trust, ASB and Line 7, three organisations that have supported sailing stars past and present over many years.

Youth Sail 2009
2009 YouthSail Regatta, hosted by Naval Point Club, Lyttelton concluded last Friday after five days of racing on Lyttelton Harbour.
The weather over the week was very variable, with light winds on the first two days changing to gusty northerlies on the Thursday and strong winds on the Friday morning dropping off to very light winds in the afternoon.
Seven 420’s and eleven Laser Radials entered from across the country and a great week of racing ensued in a very friendly atmosphere. Both classes went to the wire to select the winners with both contenders separated by a single point going in to the last race.
Brittany Wornall (Mount Pleasant Yacht Club) and Emma Goodwin (Napier Sailing Club) came out on top of the 420 fleet recording six wins in the twelve race series. It was a close fought event for the top spot and Wornall and Goodwin clinched the top spot on count back from sister duo Emma and Sarah Berry (Evans Bay Yacht & Motorboat Club) who also won six races and finished on equal points.
The first male 420 crew was William Talbot and Mike Anderson from Naval Point Club in 3rd overall.
Winner of the Laser Radial class was Josh Porebski (Worser Bay Boating Club), with 15 points and George Lane (Murrays Bay Sailing Club) close behind claiming 2nd place with 16 points. Dan Philpott (Naval Point Club) was 3rd.
Japanese Youth Sailing Exchange Program - Update
 Three Young New Zealand sailors returned recently from a successful tour of Japan having taken part in a Sailing Exchange Programme. The Japanese Youth Sailing Exchange Program is an initiative funded by the Yamaha Motor Foundation for Sport.
The trio consisting of Rachel Basevi, Josh Porebski and George Lane competed at the Japanese Youth Sailing Championships and the Japanese Sea Hopper Nationals. The Sea Hopper is a Launch Pad to the Laser Radial or other youth classes and is similar to a Splash, and despite being slightly larger then what is considered to be Ideal, the New Zealanders took to it well.
Kiwi sailors battled at the front of the fleet throughout the event, and it was Wellington based sailor Josh Porebski, who after winning the Japanese Youth Nationals in the Laser Radial (Note - this is a correction to results published in our previous update) left the minor placing to fellow YNZ National Youth Squad members, George Lane & NZL Yachting Trust Youth Team Member Rachel Basevi.
The Sea Hopper regatta finished in dramatic style with Josh winning on count back over Rachel with George one point further back.
“George got caught in his straps through the tack and capsized. It was a very close cross and if George had of made it past on port he would have won the regatta. Speaking to them after, neither of them had expected two Japanese sailors to show up on the last beat.
This single point from the Japanese beating Rachel, allowed Josh to sneak, ahead of the Japanese crowd favorite Rachel, into first overall.” Coach Clifton Webb reported after the final heat.
By all accounts the trip has been a successful and enlightening experience to these sailors.

PHRF – Revalidations due next month
 Developments to be introduced to coincide with the commencement of the new season for PHRF handicaps will make revalidating much simpler for owners. Additionally, information becoming available online at www.yachtingnz.org.nz will ensure greater transparency to the PHRF handicap system for owners and crew around New Zealand.
Current certificates expire on May 31st and revalidations for the 2009-2010 season will be accepted from May 1st encouraging owners to get in early and be up to date for racing. If you have a current PHRF certificate you will receive by post a revalidation form in the coming weeks. This year you will receive a copy of the most recent measurements provided to Yachting New Zealand and you will be asked to declare any changes, eliminating the need to complete an entire application form for us.
By visiting www.yachtingnz.org.nz you will be able to view the declared PHRF measurement s for any boat with a current certificate as well as race history reports used to determine handicaps. We’re aiming to have the new website development up and running with the start of the new PHRF season.
IRC International expert to visit New Zealand
The Royal Ocean Racing Club’s Technical Director, Mike Urwin, will visit New Zealand in the last week of April to give the IRC Owner’s Association and IRC boat owners guidance and advice on using the rule in New Zealand. Mike will visit Auckland and Wellington, where he will meet with owners, builders and designers.
There will be two evenings open to the public:
- Monday 27th April at 7.30pm in the Commodore’s Room, Royal NZ Yacht Squadron, Westhaven, Auckland.
- Thursday 30th April at 7:30pm in the Wardroom, Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club, Oriental Parade, Wellington
Individual and small group meetings will also be available for yacht and sail designers and for those requiring more technical / personalised information. These will be limited and come as a first in basis.
The visit is organised by Yachting New Zealand and the IRC Owner’s Association and there will be no charge for participation. Please register you interest by contacting Jenny Clarke in Auckland or Peter Vause in Wellington as numbers may be limited.
Young 88 Nationals
Once again the Young 88 class attracted a large fleet for the National Championships sailed last weekend in Auckland. 27 boats took part, many with some of New Zealand’s top sailing talent on the helm, and the event continues to prove itself as one of the most competitive and popular of New Zealand’s keelboat regattas.

International Paints Auckland to Tauranga Race
61 boats left Auckland harbour in a 15 knot south westerly for the International Paints Auckland to Tauranga Race sailed just before Easter. The wind developed however and with gusts up to 50 knots around Channel Island the race provided exciting and challenging conditions and a new race record for multihulls up to 10.66 metres.
First on line, Attitude toppled the division record, previously held by Timberwolf, by over an hour, crossing the finish line in 10hours 11minutes. First monohull to reach Tauranga was Vela Veloce in a time of 11hours 52minutes.
All boats struggled for wind by the time they reached Karewa Island and some of the last boats took up to three hours to get to the finish line six miles away. It was a race of all conditions with many boats sustaining some damage, and one capsize. Tauranga Boats, Arethusa and Sniper went to the rescue of the upturned cat Catabatic, and her crew of three were taken aboard Arethusa and transferred to Whitianga Coastguard at Old Man Rock.

Opti Nats 2009
The 2009 Optimist Nationals were sailed at Wellington’s Worser Bay over Easter. Organised by Richard and Ali Middleton, with help from numerous others, the NZIODA has extended a big thank you for their hard work and for a spectacular event, which attracted a number of international sailors. The Open Fleet sailed a total of 14 races over 5 days of very changeable weather.
Congratulations to Taylor Burn of Queen Charlotte Yacht Club - 1st Open and 2009 National Champion! The top five placegetters were as follows;

The Green fleet sailed a total of 7 races in varying conditions. 1st place went to Isaac McHardie (12) Tauranga, 2nd Nick Thyne (12), Worser Bay, and 3rd Mathew Bindon, (12), Kerikeri.

3.7 Class National Championship
 John Elliott and Chris Mitchell report on the 3.7 Nationals sailed over Easter...
Rhys Johnston won the 3.7 Nationals at the Bay of Islands Yacht Club over Easter with a clear points advantage. In second place was Derek Scott, defending champion, and in third place was Ben de Fluiter.
Sailing conditions were quite difficult for Friday and Saturday, with only three light air races completed out of the five scheduled, and one race abandoned. This was a trying time for Race Officer Tony Brown and the BoI volunteers. Generally, the wind died off as soon as a start sequence was begun.
However, a more reliable but shifty breeze of up to 12 knots came in on the Sunday, allowing four more races to be completed. Lance O'Connell won the Veterans prize, and, only a few weeks into sailing the 3-7 class, Katie de Lange stood out by taking both the Ladies and the Under 21 prizes.
The Class is looking forward to visiting Tauranga again over the winter series. The Auckland Champs will be at Takapuna over the weekend of April 25 (Anzac), and Wellington was confirmed as the first choice location for the Nationals in 2010 (Easter).

Townson 32 Nationals
Tony Kendall and crew aboard Sunlight have claimed the Townson 32 National title on provisional results in from the Altex Marine Paints & Hauraki Marine 2009 Townson 32 Class Championships sailed on 18th and 19th April 2009. With four race wins from six races Kendall and crew proved hard to beat in the regatta organised by Bucklands Beach Yacht Club which attracted Townson 32s.

New Details: Murrays Bay Celebration
Murrays Bay Sailing Club have announced some new details for its half century coming of age celebration, and wishes to invite past and present members to celebrate at two events:
Club Open Day - all past members particularly welcome, full day of activities and talks, boats on display, on Sunday 26th April from 1pm
A formal dinner will be held at Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron on Saturday 2nd May (not Royal Akarana Yacht Club as previously published)

Affiliation Fee Vote – Clubs, Have Your Say!
All affiliated Yacht Clubs have been asked to vote on Yachting New Zealand affiliation fees – the vote is due by the end of this month, just eight days from now. There are two alternative methodologies, and your Club can vote to either continue using the existing SEM levy methodology or to change to a ‘Graded’ levy methodology.
The compilation of detailed information posted to Yacht Clubs on both of the alternatives, as well as relevant background information has been published on www.yachtingnz.org.nz and you are encouraged to read this: click here. The information includes examples of each of the alternatives, and also provides an insight into the administration work required by Clubs in both instances, which is a significant aspect to consider.
The existing SEM methodology is based only on a declaration of your Club’s overall subscription income and senior subscription rate. By comparison the alternative graded method takes into account varying types of club membership, and would require Clubs to report a detailed membership breakdown to Yachting New Zealand.
“The key factor to consider is to determine an equitable sharing mechanism of the cost of member services between clubs and simplicity of administration for both clubs and YNZ,” says Des Brennan, Chief Executive. “An important factor to consider in your decision is that irrespective of any change in allocation methodology, the overall cost of member services will remain essentially unchanged. Consequently, any reduction in one clubs allocation will result in an increase in the allocation for another club.”
Club Survey Reminder
Yachting New Zealand needs all clubs to return their completed club surveys urgently. Club surveys provide us with important information about membership trends and other data that is required by many of our funding sources. The survey also provides your Yacht Club with an opportunity to provide feedback to Yachting New Zealand on our services.
If your club has not yet returned its survey, please send it back urgently using the self addressed envelope provided, or email reception@yachtingnz.org.nz if you need assistance.
Sailing Games Book
 International enquiry regarding Yachting New Zealand’s recently launched Sailing Games book has flooded in and the publication looks set to be used as a fun sailing tool in countries including South Africa, Canada, USA, Australia and Germany.
The book is a collection of forty fun games to improve skills and knowledge, ten for on shore and thirty for on the water. This book is available from Yachting New Zealand and is only $16.99 plus postage. See the “Store” section of the YNZ website.

Judging Level 1- Introduction to Judging
These Seminars offer beginners to Judging an opportunity to learn from more experienced Judges. People with experience across the range are equally catered for including sailors. There will still be an opportunity for judges to sit the exam if this is required for their revalidation, or for those wishing to obtain a new qualification.
