Will Loy defends Solo Tyler Trophy at HISC

After the storms of the preceding week and with the wind still blowing over 20 knots, Race Officer Mike McIntyre decided to run the 48th holding of the venerable Tyler Trophy inside Chichester Harbour. This was to the relief of most of the 22 Soloists who were there and ready to brave the conditions.

David McGregor started his challenge in the first race by establishing a large, early lead. However, the blustering NW wind gave plenty of opportunities for place changing in the tightly contested race behind him, with the leaders all closing up on the final run of the four lap windward leeward course. Nick Rawlins finished second and Barry Blaydes third.

Will Loy began his defence of the trophy in earnest in race 2 which was now on a conventional triangle/loop course. Loy quickly sailed through the early leaders and then held off Rawlings and McGregor to the finish.

Blaydes used his knowledge of the harbour to lead for the first lap in race 3, but Loy spotted the move and took over the lead on the second round. McGregor closed up on the final lap but could not get higher than third. So, it was Loy who had the two firsts and retained the Tyler Trophy.
