Veteran skipper steers homebuilt sloop to possible trophy win
by Ian Grant on 14 Apr 2001
Ian Gleeson is proud of the fresh wind sailing performance of his homebuilt ocean racer Terror, which completed the course with a career beat race time for the proud 'Old Salt'.
Gleeson spent many long hours over six years to build his yacht in the family rumpus room and was pleased with his fastest ever Brisbane-Gladstone race.
'It was a rewarding race for us but it came at a cost however you tend to forget that after the ride we had'.
'We have been trying for some years to beat Boundary Riders time and finally we had the right conditions'.
'Our race seemed to be in jeopardy after the mainsail split during a gybe near Lady Elliott Island, it was an unintentional reef of the sail that we didn't need' Gleeson said.
'However we just had to hang in there and do the best we could for our for our club team mates Sea and Outsidedge as we were keen to have our name on the inaugural Federation Cup'. He added.
Terror passed a few boats as they power sailed up Gladstone Harbour to claim the fastest race time for her proud owner, builder and skipper.
The popular skipper headed the Performance Handicap provisional times late today and seems certain to win the class over their Redcliffe Peninsula Yacht Club team mate Sea Noble Engineering sailed by Rob and Ben Noble while Bobsled was provisionally placed third.
