Cressy Championship - Sailors strut their wares under breezy weather
Sun, 11 Nov 2012

The 2012 ISSA Singlehanded National Championship got underway on Saturday with Mitchell Kiss of Holland, Michigan and Malcolm Lamphere of Lake Forrest, Illinois taking an early lead after a gusty first day of competition off the Belmont Veterans Memorial Pier in Long Beach, California. 32 of the finest Singlehanded high school sailors across the United States gather to fight for the coveted Cressy Trophy.

The event is organized by the Interscholastic Sailing Association in conjunction with the host, the United States Sailing Center-Long Beach.

The participants competed in two fleets of 18 Laser Standard Full Rigs and Laser Radials. The sailors earned their spots by qualifying at championship regattas in their respective districts.

Ten races were completed on Saturday in each fleet. The conditions were fantastic for racing with cool north-northwest winds between 10 to 18 knots throughout the day.

Kiss, last year’s Radial Fleet Championship winner, leads the Laser Standard fleet. He represents Black River High School in Holland, MI. Mitchell also won a bronze medal at the 2012 Laser Radial Youth World Championship.

Lamphere leads the Radial division by 18 points.

Racing is scheduled to resume at 10:15 a.m. on Sunday, conditions permitting.

All on-land activities are based at the US Sailing Center-Long Beach, and racing
can be watched from the pier.

For scoring updates and information, follow the regatta online.

The Interscholastic Sailing Association (ISSA) is the governing body of high school sailing in the United States. Detailed info on the ISSA can be found online here.
