After the light, shifty conditions of the opening day, the BMW Auckland Regatta fleet was treated to champagne racing conditions today with steady northerly breezes in the 15-18 knot range.

'The wind was remarkably steady all day,' said Megan Kensington, Principal Race Officer on the Eastern Beach course.

Towards evening, the cloud lowered with occasional light drizzle, but not enough to dampen enthusiasm for the Steinlager beach party on Motuihe Island. With the fleet anchored in the western bay, competitors made their way ashore and enjoyed food, music and companionship, reliving the dramas of the day.

The BMW Auckland Regatta is jointly run by the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron and Bucklands Beach Yacht Club. Eighty five yachts in 12 divisions are competing in the regatta, which finishes on Sunday.

For today’s racing, the fleet grew with the addition of the Elliott 7 yachts sailed by the Lion Foundation Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron’s Youth Training Programme and the sport boats.

Standout performer of the regatta so far is Myserious X, skippered by P. Waters in the Farr MRX Division. After two days of racing Myserious X has gone unbeaten.

Next closest in class domination is Whio, skippered by Tim McDowell in the multihull 8.5 Division, which is combining the BMW Auckland Regatta with its national championships. Whio has won six out of seven completed races in her division.

Apart from those two, today’s standout performers were Phil Yuill’s Division C campaigner Max Headroom, which scored a clean sheet of wins in four races, followed by Ice Breaker, skippered by Connel McLaren in Division A with three wins and a second.

Andy Anderson at the helm of Surething in Division B achieved a similar result. In the Young 88s, Skitzo with Bianca Cook in charge, also scored three wins, but marred her scoresheet with a downfleet finish in the other race.
