2012 New Zealand National Laser Championship – Update after Day 2

On Day 1 of the New Zealand Laser National Championships competitors were greeted with a light and lingering southerly breeze and a forecasted northerly change.

This resulted in a delay while the light southerly died away and immediately made way for spectacular Wellington day with the sun shining and an enjoyable but challenging northerly of 18 to 22 knots and a building sea state.

After the completion of the first two races the New Zealand Olympic representatives are leading their respective classes. Andrew Murdoch leads to Laser Open class with a first, and second while Sara Winther has dominated the first day by winning both races. Both sailors were showing their class with reported excellent starts at the favoured boat end of the line.

The international competitors are also showing their class in the Laser Open Class with Rutger van Schnaardenburg of the Netherlands in second overall, and Kristan Ruth of Norway in third. Additionally, Jee Min Ha of Korea is in fourth place after winning race two.

In the Radial fleet Matthew Kempkers representing Wakatere Boating club is in second place overall and is also leads the youth division. He is 5 poinst adrift of Winther. In third place is Logan Dunning Beck also representing Wakatere.

In the masters full rig fleet former world masters world champion Murray Thom completed the first day with a perfect score of two wins. Another former Masters World champion and defending national champion Mark Page is in second after scoring a second in each of the days races. Two local Worser Bay sailors, Andrew Dellabarca and Rob Woodward occupy third and fourth.

In the Masters Radial fleet, Wakatere Boating Club team mates Pete Thomas and Mike Keeton have been the most consistent performers and share the lead. Worser Bay Sailor Edmund Tam rounds out the top three. Other leading competitors, Scott Leith and Mark Orams (both former Masters world champions) suffered gear damage in separate races which has pushed them down the points table but will be expected to be back in contention later in the competition

In the 4.7s Charlotte Corston is leading after scoring 2 firsts followed by Emma Sullivan and Jacob Miller. It looks like Charlotte will be one to watch in the future.

Day two of the regatta was subsequently blown out with a strong northerly followed by a strong southerly front and torrential rain leaving no option but to delay proceedings with the intention of catching up on the missed races in the remaining two days of the regatta.

We look forward to great sailing on Monday and Tuesday.
