Joe Newton: Will the Cup transform sailing?

ORACLE Racing trimmer Joey Newton addressed the question “Will the America’s Cup transform sailing?” in this interview with ACTV.

The AC45s are the most physically challenging boats that I’ve ever sailed on. They’re the hardest sailing you’ll do. For us it came as a little bit of a shock. We’re all reasonably fit guys from previous Cups, but the fitness is at a new level sailing to keep up with these things.

If someone said to me sailing is not a sport, I would say watch one of the AC45 races. You’ll be able to see how hard it is and how much of an athlete you have to be to get one of these things around the course.

As sailors we’ve missed that stadium effect that other sports have when you’re playing in a stadium and get to have the crowd involved. In the AC45 World Series we’ve been slowly introduced to that; where you are sailing in front of thousands of people and you can hear them screaming and letting you know when you’re about to tip one of these things over.

The interview is part of a mixed-media advertising campaign that will be run in the Bay area. Other personalities include the likes of Artemis Racing’s Paul Cayard, Olympic freestyle skiing gold medalist Johnnie Mosely and Olympic campaigner and ACTV commentator Genny Tulloch.

ACEA applauds congressional vote

Source: America’s Cup Media // Nov. 4, 2011

The America’s Cup Event Authority today issued the following statement on the America’s Cup Act of 2011:

“We applaud the members of the U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives who voted overwhelmingly in support of the America’s Cup Act of 2011,” said Craig Thompson, Chief Executive Officer, America’s Cup Event Authority. “This Act enables our international field of America’s Cup teams to participate in the only global sporting event currently committed to come to the United States in the next decade.”

The upcoming America’s Cup events in Newport, Rhode Island, San Francisco and San Diego, California are predicted to create thousands of jobs and over $1 billion in economic impact over the next two years. For the first time in history, the America’s Cup will be able to be seen from shore, creating tremendous public access for spectators as well as drawing large spectator crowds to benefit the port cities hosting America’s Cup events.

“We are very proud that our host cities of San Diego, San Francisco, and Newport, Rhode Island will benefit greatly from hosting America’s Cup events,” said Thompson. “We are working closely with the cities of San Diego, San Francisco, and Newport, Rhode Island to maximize this economic impact.”

Italians back in competition for America’s Cup

Source: AP, Sports Illustrated // Nov. 3, 2011

Italy's Luna Rossa Challenge and fashion house Prada are back in the America's Cup.

The Italians announced Wednesday that their challenge for the 2013 America's Cup has been accepted by Golden Gate Yacht Club. The late challenge comes as the other teams are preparing for the third stop on the America's Cup World Series starting next week in San Diego.

The Italians are expected to take delivery of their AC45 catamaran in December and begin competing next spring when the AC World Series comes to their home waters, in Naples in April followed by a stop in Venice in May.

With the addition of the Italians, there are eight foreign challengers for the Auld Mug, which will be defended in 2013 on San Francisco Bay by Oracle Racing.

The challenge is headed by Patrizio Bertelli, Prada's chief executive officer. Prada is providing 40 million euros ($55.2 million) in sponsorship. Luna Rossa's backing yacht club is the Circolo della Vela Sicilia of Palermo.
