America's Cup World Series: New European venue named for May 2012

'Venice - venue for the May 2012 round of the America’s Cup World Series'    Americas Cup Media

America's Cup World Series event managers have today named the Italian port of Venice, Italy as a stop on the ACWS tour.

Venice has apparently been also offered a second venue spot on the 2013 circuit on unspecified dates in April 2013, however the Louis Vuitton Cup is due to get underway in July 2013 in San Francisco, USA.

The Venice regatta will take place on May 17-20 2012, with match and fleeting racing championships as well as the overall winner-take-all title.

It is claimed that Venice will offer 'both great sailing conditions and proximity to the racing, allowing spectators to see the world’s top sailors compete just off the shore.'

The venue will include spectator access along numerous points on the waterfront, including the team bases in the Venetian Arsenal. Dating back to the 1100s, Arsenale di Venezia was originally a shipyard and naval depot, providing a historic base for the sailors throughout the event.

The 2011-2012 AC World Series kicked off Cascais, Portugal this past August and is traveling to Plymouth, UK September 10-18. The circuit will complete its 2011 stops in San Diego, California November 12-20.

Of the four venues announced so far, none have been the home port of the seven challenger teams, and the Defender Oracle Racing sails under the burgee of a San Francisco based club.

Initially there were two Italian Challengers, including the Challenger of Record, Club Nautico di Roma (Mascalzone Latino) - who withdrew citing financial issues and an inability to raise sufficient sponsorship to mount a competitive challenge.

A second challenger Venezia Challenge (Rowing Club Roggero di Lauria in Palermo) was evicted from the 34th America's Cup by the defending club, after claims they had not met some payment requirements. The website for Venezia Challenge indicates they may seek compensation from Golden Gate Yacht Club over a claimed misapplication of the Protocol governing the 34th America's Cup.

There are now no Italian Challengers in the 34th America's Cup.
