Wellington to host Global Sailing Challenge during Rugby World Cup

Chris Coad

Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club in Wellington has laid down the challenge to sailors visiting New Zealand during the Rugby World Cup to go to Wellington and compete in the Global Sailing Challenge

The Global Sailing Challenge is designed to give sailors who are visiting New Zealand for the Rugby World Cup an opportunity to participate in a fun sailing regatta on Saturday 8 October and Sunday 9 October, which is the quarter finals weekend for the cup.

The Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club is situated in the middle of Wellington, the capital city of New Zealand, and will be hosting two quarter final matches that weekend (www.wellingtonnz.com)

The Global Sailing Challenge involves two days of round robin, short course, fleet racing in 10 metre long one design MRXs on Wellington's inner harbour.

At any one time four teams will be racing each other out on the harbour. We envisage some clubs will be able to supply a full team of six sailors for the event but we can also accommodate individual sailors by allocating them to teams who are short of a member or two.

The racing is planned to make sure sailors have plenty of time to come ashore and either go to the stadium for the quarter finals of the Rugby World Cup or join the Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club members in the wardroom to watch the games on our big screen.

To find out more about the Global Sailing Challenge visit the Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club website at www.rpnyc.org.nz. All the information you need to join in the Global Sailing Challenge is available on the site.
