Harken Match Racing: Aussies and Kiwis lead morning of Day 1
|
The 2011 Harken Youth International Match Racing Championships has begun with lots of close match racing action on the Waitemata Harbour this morning. The scene is set for some excellent match racing between the eight youth teams. With the excitement of the new Elliott 7’s, a fresh 15 knot easterly and flooding tide the air was electric as the boats left the dock this morning. Last year’s winner (and also the 2009 winner) Josh Junior from Wellington’s Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club is now over the Under 21 years of age limit so has passed on all his knowledge to two teams helmed by Josh Porebski & Adam Middleton. Porebski is currently ranked 182nd and came fourth at this event last year so was keen to start strong this morning and he has done just that. Porebski is currently first equal overall with wins 3 wins and 1 loss including a win over Middleton. Italian Valerio Galati is the highest ranked entrant in the series at 71st on the ISAF Open Match Racing Rankings and this being his first regatta ‘down under’ the team is eager show-case their match racing skills. Galati and team started well this morning with two straight wins over Stephanie Doyle & David Hazard and was leading Porebski in race three but had a penality and didn’t have enough of a lead on the final run to complete it before Porebski crossed the line to take the win.

Griffin and team are also in the top four, after four flights, with 3 wins over Middleton, Reece & Doyle and 1 loss to Codie Banks. Rounding out the top four are the two Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron teams helmed by Codie Banks & David Hazard who have used their experience in the Elliott 7 metre Youth Training boats to their advantage this morning with 3 wins and 1 loss each. When these two teams met in Flight Four it was Hazard who snuck through on the finish line giving Banks a penality in doing so and took the win by 28 seconds. Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron’s Jordan Reece has come off a bumper year, finishing in the top four in the last six events he has competed in, including the Hardy Cup U25 Match Racing at his home club in Sydney, an event that finished one day before the practice day of this event. Reece however has had a slow start this morning grabbing just 1 win over the Italian team and 3 losses.
