Moth Worlds 2011 – Day 2 Down Under Dominates

Moth Worlds 2011 – Day 2 The defending World Champion Simon Payne (GBR) sums up.

‘It is pretty clear that the Australian Moth Squad, led by Nathan Outteridge with affiliates like New Zealander Peter Burling who have been training with them, is going well - the time they have put in is paying off. It is great to see. Everyone likes to see people who have worked hard do well.

‘The committee is handling the split fleet system really well. Credit to the Moth class how that happened and how the competitors behaved on the start line.

‘Remember this qualifying series only counts for one race in the Worlds itself. Not really too much to worry about as this stage but I have clearly got to get better.

‘The rigid wing is going better than many expected but it still has some issues.

‘Charlie McKee for so much of his career has been giving things a go. He is probably less motivated to a wing event, more motivated to develop gear now. He has won Olympic medals and so forth. He seemed to handle pursuing it.

‘On Day One of the Worlds I saw him across the fleet and won the race and that was fantastic to see. I was with him all the way.

‘It´s in its infancy but the solid sail maybe the future of the class, it may not be. The important thing is that it is here. It is on display and its been trialled in all kinds of conditions.

‘People are able to see it and make educated decisions and form opinions on it rather than any second hand chat.

‘Still lots of time to go in this regatta, great conditions on day 2, lets hope we have more of that.’
