America's Cup: The Party Line out of Dubai

The blog on www.americascup.com reports on the Potential Competitor and Media Briefing held in Dubai before the start of the Semi-Finals of the Louis Vuitton Trophy Dubai.

Consistent with the stance taken at the previous Potential Competitor Briefing there were no names released of teams or attendees or clubs. Given that of the six competitors in the LVT Dubai, and the fact that there are four announced entries for the 34th America's Cup, three of which are public, Artemis (SWE), Mascalzone Latino (ITA) and BMW Oracle Racing (USA).

Potential Competitor Briefing

Continuing a dialogue that started with a preliminary briefing to competitors in Paris just last month, today we held a second set of workshops on the 34th America’s Cup in Dubai. This workshop coincides with the Louis Vuitton Trophy, where a number of competitors and potential competitors are racing right now.

There has been a lot of progress in the month since the first briefing in Paris, both on our side as the event organizers and from potential teams. We started off the workshop with some updates on a number of key interests to the competitors and potential competitors. Richard Worth, Chairman of ACEA, along with team members Mark Bullingham, Anthony Romano, Vicky Selway-Swift and Stephanie Martin covered a wide range of topics of interest, including marketing, branding, public relations and sponsorship.

The ACEA team expressed how good it has been to be able to hear directly from the competitors and what potential competitors need to help them in their quest to become participants in this next America’s Cup.

'These summits are invaluable to us as a way of staying in touch with the concerns of teams. It gives us an opportunity to share our vision, gather feedback and engage in constructive dialogue as we move forward with planning for the 34th America’s Cup and the America’s Cup World Series,' said Worth.

This evening, we have a session scheduled with Iain Murray, the Regatta Director, to share information on sporting concerns.

Media Briefing:

We had a morning roundtable session on Thursday morning with the international media who are in town for the Louis Vuitton Trophy regatta.

Regatta Director Iain Murray and ACEA Chairman Richard Worth fielded questions from a dozen journalists on a wide range of topics about the 34th America’s Cup.

Among the revelations:

* Delivery for the first AC45 will be in January. Competitors will be assigned sailing slots for sea trials in New Zealand in advance of receiving their own boats, as previously scheduled. The race management team will take the opportunity of the NZ sea trials to run dress rehearsals for their regatta operations as well.
* There will be up to five America’s Cup World Series events in 2011, beginning in late June/early July. Venues are expected to be confirmed beginning early in the new year.
* Work on revised racing rules for racing America’s Cup multihulls is now in an advanced draft stage. The updated racing rules will be published early next year.

Both Iain Murray and Richard Worth told us they’ve had to begin their operations from a standing start, and the process of building the event organizing team is continuing at pace.

'It’s been a very busy period of time for us. We’re working on all aspects of what we need to do and there is no doubt this is a very big job, but one that has been quite exciting,' Murray said. 'We’re working on the events, on shipping arrangements, on boats, on assembling all the equipment we’ll need for on-the-water activities and on shore facilities, and team bases etc. Beginning in January, we’ll be announcing the format of the World Series events. So we’re making a good deal of forward progress on our regatta deliverables.'

Worth agreed, telling the media: 'We’ve started from a shared vision with Russell Coutts and Larry Ellison for what the 34th America’s Cup could be. Our team has been challenged with translating this vision into action, and we’ve been working quite intensely over the past several months to realize that vision, which has been good fun. With the new technology and commercial opportunities, the opportunity and the ambition is there for this America’s Cup to reach great heights.'

And that work continues unabated. Many of us on the AC34 team are staying in town through the weekend, continuing meetings on a less formal basis as the Louis Vuitton Trophy regatta wraps up.
