America's Cup: Two new teams enter on opening day for Challenges

Event organizers today confirmed receipt of the first Notices of Challenge or entries for the 34th America’s Cup in 2013.

'We're only a few hours into a five-month entry period, so to already have a total of four entries is a very positive sign,' said Iain Murray (AUS), Regatta Director for the 34th America's Cup and CEO of America's Cup Race Management (ACRM). The enetry number includes that of the Defender BMW Oracle Racing, who under the Protocol must enter as a Defence candidate. There are now three Challengers including Mascalzone Latino, who now becomes the Challenger of Record, assuming both the other two Challenges will be verified.

The four entries will have paid the required fee of USD 25,000 to America's Cup Properties Inc (holder of the Cup rights and marks) as an 'expense contribution' . By July next year two performance bonds totaling USD 3million will have to be paid, either in cash or on a documentary basis. The Entry Fee itself of 1million Euro does not have to be paid until April 2012.

In addition the teams will have to purchase at least on of the new AC45 wingsailed catamarans being built in Warkworth to race in the new 13 regatta America's Cup World Series. Not competing in one of those events, without the permission of the Regatta Director, will result in the loss of one of the Performance Bonds, with a second offence resulting in exclusion from the 34th America's Cup.

The first AC45's will be launched in Auckland just after Christmas 2010, and racing is expected to start from June 2011.

Writing in the UK's The Independent?nid=76436, America's Cup correspondent reported that although 'the America’s Cup Race Management organisation said it was withholding the names of the two new teams, one is expected to be Torbjorn Tornqvist’s Artemis group, based in Sweden, managed by the American Paul Cayard and joined by another American, Terry Hutchinson.

'Artemis is expected to hold a press conference in Stockholm on 8 November', Alexander added

The other Challenger is not known, sources close to Emirates Team New Zealand denied that the world's most successful professional racing team was one of the first challengers. Russia's Synergy is expected to have been the other team to enter on the opening day.

The 34th edition of the sport's oldest international competition has been renewed and revitalized by a move to spectacular wing-sailed catamarans, as well as a three year program of racing in venues around the world and a new emphasis on innovative television and new media programming.

'The competitors who applied for entry today join the previously declared Italian challenger Mascalzone Latino. BMW ORACLE Racing submitted its defense application today,' Murray said.

'The other two teams will not be named as their applications are being verified. Throughout the five-month entry period, ACRM will announce the time and date when an entry has been accepted. Each team will release
details of its entry publicly at their discretion. Additional entries are expected soon,' Murray added.

The entry process and validation procedures are set out in the America’s Cup Rules and can be found at www.americascup.com.

The entry period for the 34th America’s Cup runs from Nov. 1, 2010, to Mar. 31, 2011.

The announcement of the venue for the 34th America's cup will be announced before the end of December 2010.
