Message: Thanks very much for your thoughtful piece on the upcoming decisions. I wish there were more public dialogue of this type by other leading observers and commentators. I look forward to your follow-up pieces.

Message: Really enjoyed that.

It strikes a chord with any official struggling to maintain relevance in even a small country sailing club - how to create interest and active participation from the general public. I think the concepts are larger even than just the America's Cup. While the average member of the public sees yachting as an elitist sport (and often never see past the elitist tosser label!) and can't feel any connection or understanding of the sport we will continue to see yachting more marginalised as a sport in the mainstream.

I and my family are mad keen to watch anything with a sail in it - yet even a couple of years of constant trawling of pay and free to air tv brings very lean pickings. Thousands of hours of (often foreign) ball sports, but bugger all boatie stuff.

Look forward to the next instalment(s).

Cheers,

Richard Davison. PLYC Heron Rep.

Message:

Hi Richard, I just read your Line on the AmCup decisions. If it needs to all about spectacle and speed. That photo of the Volvo 70 looks far more spectacular than the multi's, with all the spray. Just compare the C C'ass Cats, one hull out of the water but look like they are just sitting there. While a boat is held 'in shot' there is little sensation of speed unless there spray flying everywhere, at least then something is moving.

Cheers
Lindsay Russell
