Longest running regatta in America heads to the starting line

NYYC
The longest-running regatta in America – New York Yacht Club’s 156th Annual Regatta presented by Rolex – heads to the starting line in Newport, R.I. at Noon this Friday, June 11, with the Around the Island (Conanicut) Race, and continues with buoy racing Saturday, June 12, through Sunday, June 13. To date, 111 boats are entered across divisions for PHRF, Classic, 6 Metre, 12 Metre, IRC-rated entries and Swan 42 and J/105s one-design classes. http://www.nyyc.org/156annual/

The list of competitors includes many veteran names including Titan 15, a Reichel/Pugh 75 owned by Tom Hill (Puerto Rico), which won its IRC class in 2009. Titan 15 will face off against many of last year’s top IRC competitors including George David’s (Hartford, Conn.) Custom Maxi Rambler, John Brim’s (New York, N.Y.) Reichel/Pugh 55 Rima 2, as well as three highly-anticipated entrants: Hap Fauth’s (Minneapolis, Minn.) Reichel/Pugh 69 Bella Mente, Niklas Zennström’s (London, U.K.) Judel/Vrolijk 72 Rán, and Puma Ocean Racing’s Volvo Ocean 70 il mostro.

Building on the success of its 2009 World Championship, the 6 Metre Class will have its own start in the Classics Division on Saturday and Sunday. NYYC Vice Commodore Bob Towse (Stamford, Conn.) will field his 1926 6 Metre, SYCE, and compete alongside Toby Rodes’s (Cambridge, Mass.) 1930-era Alana, and Jed Pearsall and Bill Doyle’s (Newport, R.I.) Clarity, the 1924 Olympic Silver Medalist.

'This weekend is the first leg of the 2010 NYYC Invitational Racing Series for Vintage and Classic Yachts and is a high-water mark for classics in the Annual Regatta,' said Doyle. 'With over 15 yachts competing in various divisions, the list of participants reads like an archive for historic yachts. Each one has an interesting provenance.' The 2009 Series overall winner Black Watch, an S&S Custom Yawl skippered by Lars Forsberg (Greenwich, Conn.), is scheduled to compete along with past NYYC Commodore Charles Townsend with his S&S Classic, Fidelio, Sam Croll III and Henry Skelsey's (Greenwich, Conn.) 8 Metre Angelita and Peter Cassidy's (Rochester, Mass.) NY-32 Siren.

Racing in the Annual Regatta takes place on Narragansett Bay and Rhode Island Sound, with daily awards and social activities at Harbour Court, NYYC’s on-the-water clubhouse. A Skippers Meeting is planned on Friday evening at 1800 and will be followed by the Around-the-Island Race prizegiving. On Saturday and Sunday, daily awards will be presented along with the Best Boat of the Day on each racing circle. Additional details can be found online in the Sailing Instructions.
