Oceanbridge Racing reports on Day 2 of the Platu 25 World Championship

'Oceanbridge Racing is interviewed on Day 2 of the Platu25 World Championships'    .
Oceanbridge Racing Team reports on Day 2 of the Platu 25 World Championships:

Day 2 was a good day for the Oceanbridge Racing team at the Platu 25 World Championships

We had an exciting day on the water with Oceanbridge Racing showing the Europeans that kiwis can be competitive in the light weather. Coming away with a 4th in the first race, 3rd in the second race and a 23rd in the third. Unfortunately we found out we were OCS in race 1 when we finished 4th.

The wind was coming out of the south which is an offshore breeze and we stuck with our game plan which was to start near the pin and head towards the shore - a nice little tip provided by Ray Davies of Emirates Team New Zealand.

Race One we started down near the pin heading towards the left hand side of the course where the pressure was waiting for us to grab. Coming up the beat we saw boats to windward dropping off which showed we had speed and hight. This highlighted the great work by Fredrick Green (Trimmer) and Marty Baker (bow - from Evolution Sails) on setting up the rig which is very different to how we do it in NZ.

We rounded the top mark 5th and managed to defend our position downwind. On the second beat we made a call to go the completely opposite side upwind to stay well clear of the fleet. Staying clear of the downwind fleet paid dividends and we clawed our way up to 4th place at the top mark and held the position to the finish.

Ralph Roberts' tips for big fleet sailing have been significant for our tactical game plan.

Race 2 started with a general recall and so the race committee decided to pull out the black flag which scared everyone away from the pin in second start. We owned the pin starting the most leeward boat with room to spear. We hit the pin with speed and we were right on the line when the gun went. Once we hit the left shift we tacked and crossed the fleet - what a feeling that was. We played a conservative game and rounded the top mark in 5th. After a nerve racking light wind run and a well played second beat we gained a couple of places to finish 3rd.

Race 3 we finished mid fleet after we missed a big shift after the start.

Tomorrow we are expecting more wind and we are feeling confident we have the boat speed and strategy to mix it with the best.

We would like to thank our sponsor Oceanbridge for helping to get us here, Ralph Roberts for his expertise in big fleet sailing which has been invaluable, Graeme from Evolution Sails for providing us the good setup and Takapuna Boating Club.

Cheers
Oceanbridge Racing
