Kiwi Match finishes 9th in Korea

'Kiwi Match in the Korea Match Cup'    Event Media
Logan Fraser reports on the SLAM Kiwi Match performance in the Korea Match Cup:

Our racing has come to an end for us in Korea after an exciting and intense three days of sailing. It came down to us needing to win two of our last three races on the final day of round robin sailing to make the quarter finals, and unfortunately we only managed one win against the up and coming crew of Torvar Mirsky and his Mirsky Racing Team.

Our first race of the day against our fellow New Zealand rivals Adam Minoprio and his ETNZ/Black Match Racing crew was un uneventful affair, we managed to win the favoured side but were slow off the line, we managed to keep it close up the first beat but the tight race track meant that there were no passing lanes giving Adam the win.

Our second race against Torvar was a great race, Torvar won the start pushing us hard for the line as we were slightly early, we managed to gybe around the pin and lead across to the favoured right hand side of the course. Torvar kept a slight advantage up the first beat but we were right on his tail at the top mark, we decided to gybe set to try and split with him, we managed to pick up a nice shift and closed the game right up coming into the bottom mark, Torvar had the inside rights to the mark but was judged to have taken too much room to round the mark gaining him a penalty. We were again right on his tail up the second beat, with Torvar trying to clear his penalty on the starboard layline, this gave us the opportunity to grab the lead, which we defended well down the last leg to take the win.

This put us into a must win match against last years Korea Match Cup defending champion and world match racing #1 ranked Sebastian Col. Seb pushed us hard in the pre start with the umpires giving us a dubious penalty, claiming we failed to keep clear as Seb luffed us coming into the start. We managed an even start splitting to the right hand side of the course. Seb was a little faster than us and rounded the top mark with a boat length lead. We worked hard down wind to round the bottom mark right on his stern. Up the second beat we gained enough to take the lead at the top mark. We tried to clear our penalty but Seb managed to roll around our bow an go on to win the race.

This left us on four wins for the regatta, which was not enough to qualify for the next round of racing. This regatta has been a valuable experience for all of us being our first world tour event and we are encourage by our performance and know we are not far off the pace.

We would like to thank the organisers of the event for providing a world class venue with facilities, support, coverage and enthusiasm second to none. The investment in the facilities and venue that has been made in Korea is very impressive and this event is sure to be very successful for many years to come.

We would also like to thank our Sponsor SLAM NZ for their support and providing us with team clothing for the regatta.
