The 85th Sanders Cup and Kingham Trophy contested in the Javelin Class concluded on Easter Sunday in Gisborne. The Gisborne Yacht Club hosted event was a great contest with taxing conditions, including an interesting mix of 5 metre swells, some great sunny weather, warm mornings, afternoon east south east breezes for sailing, and fantastic hospitality at night.
After three days of racing in moderate to light wind conditions, the Sanders Cup came down to the last race between Manawatu and Bay of Plenty. Manawatu represented by David Brown and Graham Roberts on Flying Circus took charge of the race from the start and lead the fleet around all marks to a very tight finish, taking the gun and the 2009 85th Sanders Cup.

While the fight for first was tight, the struggle between second and third as well as fourth and fifth was even tighter.Bay of Plenty’s Ben Bax and Adam Scott-Mackie on Bay Nissan took second place on countback from Northland’s Craig Gilbert and Antje Muller sailing Bungholio.
Defending & consecutive Sanders Cup winner East Coast (Ross and Colin Shanks on Riders on the Storm) had a great performance on the last day to take fourth place on countback from the young North Harbour team of Stuart Goodes and Ollie Scott-Mackie on Havoc.
Rounding out the results, 6th went to Zac Lam and Kez Cameron sailing for Auckland on Bad Blood, and 7th was Todd Gilbert who made great to effort to travel up all the way from Wellington even though his crew abandoned him on short notice, so he sailed together with his father Peter. Results
