Samba by Night, Nations Cup by Day - Kiwis on Tour Diary for Day 2

Hey everyone

Our second day started well. We pushed the American team over the line and managed to win the race despite a very dubious umpire call (where we were forced to tack with a spinnaker and deemed to have not tried to keep clear)

In the second race we won the start against the team from Finland and after some early exchanges of the lead we extended to win the race.

Against the Spanish team we led off the start line and then tacked to cover them. However they changed modes better than us when the breeze died suddenly and just managed to spit us out. We then tacked toward what looked like a good shift but turned into a dud. They got a nice right hand shift and that was the race over.

We had a narrow lead from the start against the Brazilian team. At the top mark we tacked above them and tried to hold them past starboard lay, however we were penalised when they luffed. We then tacked and luffed the Brazilian team but the umpires decided that we had passed head to wind and penalised us again.

Our race against the Danish started with an intense prestart. We were being held below the pin until about 1 minute 30 seconds to the start. We got out of this position and managed to start to windward and slightly behind. We then tacked off and almost squeezed the Danish team, however in one luff the umpires again decided that we had passed head to wind and penalised us. We held the race close but were unable to pass them and finished up losing the race.

However Will's keen eyes had spotted the Danish crew illegally hiking off a non working sheet while trying not to be squeezed out. We red flagged the race and had a hearing about this infringement where the Danish team were docked half a point, but not disqualified as we were aiming for.

So we ended the day with a disappointing 2/5 wins, which was not good enough to make the repechage. This is a shame as we were just coming to grips with some of the differences in umpiring style that were costing us. Tomorrow we have a day off and we will race off for 7/8 place on Friday.
