Following the 420 and RS:X Nationals last weekend, the ISAF Youth Worlds Team nomination events for 2009 have now been completed and the top placed Youth entries from the New Zealand Championships in the Laser Radial, International 420, International Hobie 16, and the RSX 8.5 Youth Divisions have been nominated for consideration for the NZL Yachting Trust Youth Team for 2009.

Alexandra Maloney and Bianca Barbarich-Bacher edged out Logan Dunning Beck and Ben Goodwin to be the best placed youth aged sailors at the 420 nationals over the weekend. This result gains them a nomination for the Girls Double handed spot. Alex and Bianca were the first placed girls in the overall standings at this regatta.

Logan and Ben were the best of the youth boys after clawing their way ahead of James Turner and Marcus Hansen on the third day of the regatta, and have now have been nominated in the Boys Double handed space. James and Marcus have been nominated in the Multihull open space based on their results at this event along with Ben and Logan who have also been nominated by the New Zealand Hobie 16 Association, based on their results at the 2009 New Zealand Hobie 16 Nationals.

Ben Mackay was a clear leader in the race for the Boys Windsurfer nomination. Ben finished the New Zealand RS:X Nationals in second place overall at the at the weekend, just behind Frenchman Thomas Goyard and ahead of the Olympians Tuli Petaja (FIN) and Nicola Girke (CAN).

Lucy Driver has been nominated for the Women’s Windsurf Division.

Sam Meech and Rachal Basevi have been nominated based on their results at the New Zealand Laser Nationals for the Boys and Girls single handed spaces.

Selectors will now meet to make decision about inclusions into the NZL Yachting Trust Youth Team for 2009. The team will be announced soon on the Yachting New Zealand Website and Briefings newsletters.

The NZL Yachting Trust Youth Team is New Zealand’s premier youth aged representative sailing team, and has been the launch pad for some of New Zealand’s most successful sailors.
