The Hobie 16 Nationals were hosted by Takapuna boating club over Auckland Anniversary weekend. The nationals consisted of 12 races with the entries from all over New Zealand and Rarotonga. The wind conditions varied from 5 -18 knots over the three days.
The father and son combination of Harry and Nathan Handley were the overall winners of the championship with Nigel Williams and Geoff Faulkner in 2nd and Andrew Springford and Reuben Hill 3rd. All three crews are local North Shore crews. The 1st Youth Crew was Ben Goodwin (Napier) and Logan Dunning-Beck.
Harry the skipper of the winning combination was the oldest competitor in the regatta at 68 years of age.
As well as winning the overall title he also won the masters division. Harry has been competing at a top level in catamaran classes in New Zealand over 40 years and has previously won world and international titles. Nathan his son and crew for the competition is a former Olympian and Americas Cup sailor.
