Sailing Olympics Qingdao - Day 10 Completed

'GBR Finish of 470 Medal Race at Qingdao'    Steve Arkley

Britain started Monday, the tenth day of sailing at the Beijing Olympics with a Silver medal for Nick Rogers and Joe Glanfield in the 470 event. Starting the race in fourth place overall and trailing at the first mark they lifted their game to power through the fleet and finish third on the water and take the Silver medal.

Australia's Nathan Wilmot and Malcolm Page had the Gold won before the Medal race but Rogers and Glanfield had to battle to lift themselves back into contention. This they did finishing third behind the Japanese. The French pair Nicolas Charbonnier and Olivier Bausset took the bronze.

In the Women's 470 it was Gold again for Australia, Elise Rechichi and Tessa Parkinson safely making sure that the Dutch did not win to clinch the Gold. The Dutch, Marcelien De Koning and Lobke Berkhout took the Silver and the Brazilian pair, Fernanda Oliveira and Isabel Swan the Bronze. Britain's Christina Bassadone and Saskia Clark finished sixth overall.

In his first race in the Laser event today, Paul Goodison won to consolidate his overall lead. He then had two, fourth places to take a 19 point lead going into the Medal race Tuesday. Second overall is Rasmus Myrgren of Sweden and third Gustavo Lima of Portugal. Goodison is now hot favourite for Britain's third Gold in the sailing.

In the Star class, Iain Percy and Andrew Simpson are second at the end of the day, they had an eighth, a second and a win. Overall leaders are Fredrik Loof and Anders Ekstrom of Sweden and third Xavier Rohart and Pascal Rambeau of France. Loof has a three point lead but only nine points cover the next five boats.

Nick Dempsey holds second place after two races in the RS:X. Tom Ashley of New Zealand leads. Racing has stopped for the boards due to light wind.

In the Laser Radial, Penny Clark has an 18, 23 and 13 for the day and is tenth overall. Anna Tunnicliffe of the USA is the overall leader ahead of Gintare Volungeviciute (LTU) and Lijia Xu (CHN).

Bryony Shaw was third in her first race today and then won her second race and is in fourth place overall. Alessandra Sensini of Italy leads.

Not such good news for the British Tornado pair, Leigh McMillan and Will Howden, they are 12 overall after Mondays racing, they had a 14 a 7 and a 7. Overall Fernando Echavarri and Anton Paz Blanco of Spain have the lead tied on points with Darren Bundock and Glenn Ashby of Australia.
