Emirates: Racing starts but not the way we wanted

Racing finally got underway today with NZL 92 losing its first race to the fast improving Italian challenge of Mascalzone Latino.

Mascalzone Latina was second challenger behind Emirates Team New Zealand in the Act 13 fleet regatta earlier this month.

'It was not the result we wanted.' Grant Dalton said. 'Mascalzone Latino showed again that their new boat is a good package and in these light and shifty conditions they out sailed us on the first beat.

'They were able to hold us upwind and when they got a favourable wind shift to the right on the first beat we knew it would be hard to find a passing lane.'

NZL 92 showed good speed downwind, gaining on each of the runs as they attacked the Italians’ lead.

'On these short courses in the light there’s always a chance of running out of race track before you can complete the attack.

'We take out of today satisfaction with the downwind performance. We’re also pleased when a tacking duel developed on the second beat we were clawing time out of them with each tack.'

ITA 99 had a 29 sec advantage at the end of the first beat. It had reduced to 8 sec at the second mark, extended to 29 at the third mark and at the finish the delta was 15 sec.

The breeze today filled in first on the south course and the first race to start in the challenger elimination series for the 2007 America’s Cup was between BMW Oracle Racing and United Internet Team Germany.
