Sail-World.com : America's Cup - The Spanish solution
America's Cup - The Spanish solution
|
'The previous boat was the New Zealand entry, and this is the Swiss entry' 'And this . . . ' 'No! Don't tell me. This is the Spanish entry !!' The Spanish Metro, free newspaper, had this cartoon Tuesday that catches perfectly the way a Spaniard will always have a contrary opinion. No decision in Spain is reached without considerable, often animated, discussion. Indeed the simplest request can attract a helpful crowd each with their own opinion on the solution. And just as forming an orderly queue is unheard of, so is taking turns or giving way when expressing a point of view. In Spain this results in a gradual rising of the voice, each participant joining in at a higher volume and all continuing despite the fact that in the end, no one is actually listening! This is wonderfully demonstrated on the many football discussion TV programmes. One of the pundits, of five or six, starts a point and will very shortly be interrupted by a different speaker, but unlike the typical BBC Grandstand style discussions, the original speaker will continue, just raising their voice. At various points all the rest will join in, in a rising crescendo, until complete bedlam reigns. The compare will then attempt to restore order and move on, but normally they just cut to an Ad break to allow a time-out. When they return the process is repeated for the next point. The Spanish challenger organisation went through considerable 'discussion and manoeuvring' before it crystallised in its present form - Desafio Espanol - and in the best Spanish stereotype everyone will have their own opinion on how it should be sailed - thus the cartoon solution with lots of wheels seems perfectly reasonable!
