505 Worlds: The weather is not usually like this!

It’s our fault. The one constant you get at any World Sailing Championship is the statement, ‘the weather is not usually like this’.

Its 200 days since we’ve had any real rain in Adelaide. Well the day the containers of 505’s arrived, was the day it started raining. We have the back end of a monsoonal trough reaching down from the top end of Australia. We’ve had flooding, with lots of roads closed. We’ve had six to seven times the average January rainfall over the last two days.

Plenty of wind too. We’ve had 30-40 knots at the Yacht Club.

Nearly all our competitors are here and are eager to get out on the water, yet the 30 + knots again today (Sunday) has kept them ashore.

What is expected to happen by Tuesday? Trough is moving out, high pressure moving in; sea breeze pattern should start to form from tomorrow.

The Weather Bureau is predicting perfect mild summer weather, expected by Tuesday, with 10-15 knot sea breezes.

Racing starts for the 505 Pre-Worlds on Tuesday. There will be six races, two each day; Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The first Australian boat home will be the Australian Champion.

Racing for the nine race SAP International 505 World Championships starts 27/1/07.
