'Transatlantic Crossing'
|
There’s nothing like crossing an ocean to hone your sailing skills. This October there’s an opportunity for YOU to join a crew sailing across the Atlantic. It’s On Deck’s ‘Transatlantic Challenge’ – you’ll be a much better sailor after you’ve spent six weeks sailing from Lisbon in Portugal to Barbados in the West Indies. It’s quite expensive, but good value for money. Of course you could just participate in one of the legs, but it’s that final leg crossing the Atlantic where you’ll build up valuable sea miles. There are four Farr 65’s participating in the 3,700 nm rally adventure. The ocean crossing leg is 2,100 nm. Here’s the company’s description of the three legs: LEG 1: LISBON to MADIERA Depart 11 October (550nm) The crew arrive into Lisbon and join the yachts at Cascais on the Estoril Coast 3 days prior to the start. A warm welcome and send off can be expected from our Portuguese hosts who have through history witnessed the departure from these shores many great adventurers such as Vasco da Gama, Henry the Navigator and Magellan to name but a few. Our first port of call is Funchal, on the Atlantic island of Madeira some 550nm from the continental shore, well known for Madeira wine and stunning lush landscapes. Allow approximately 5 days for leg 1 and a week stopover at Madiera. LEG 2: MADEIRA to CAPE VERDE ISLANDS Depart 22 October (1058nm) This 1058nm ocean leg takes us South to the tropics and into the North East trades. On route we sail between the well known Canary Islands before making landfall in Mindelo on the unspoilt and remote Cape Verdian island of Sao Vicente close to West African coast. The islands are stunning, with beautiful white beaches, colonial style villages and dramatic volcanic landscape. Few visitors arrive by sail and so expect a warm welcome from the locals. We allow approximately 10 days for Leg 2 and crew can enjoy a week stopover to explore these intriguing islands before the passage across the Atlantic. LEG 3: CAPE VERDE ISLANDS to BARBADOS Depart 7 November (2,100nm) Your final 2,100nm will be the Atlantic crossing and should not only be fast exhilarating blue water sailing but expect to see plenty of dolphins, turtles and the odd whale or too, as we sail West to the tropical island of Barbados our final destination. On arrival a crew party for all four participating yachts will be organised to celebrate and welcome you in, as the New Adventurers! The total cost is around £2,750 /US$5100 / €4,000 / AUS$6,600 For full information go to their WEBSITE Click Here to write to us about this article
