West Marine Pacific Cup–'One Million Miles of Fun'

'Invited this year'

One million miles of fun racing to Hawaii will be celebrated during the 2006 West Marine Pacific Cup. Race organizers will be providing a special set of awards to commemorate this milestone.

Also for the first time this year, the fun race will be open to multi-hulls, another indication that these craft are continually rising to new heights of popularity.

The West Marine Pacific Cup bills itself as the 'Fun Race to Hawaii.' Originally run from San Francisco Bay to Kauai, the race now finishes at the very friendly Kaneohe Yacht Club, on the windy northern side of Oahu. The race is open to ocean-capable monohulls and, for the first time in 2006, multihulls.

The 2006 West Marine Pacific Cup will mark the 100th anniversary of racing from California to Hawaii. The organizers of the first race originally planned a San Francisco start in 1906, but moved to Long Beach because of the earthquake that year. It became the Honolulu Transpac and is now held on odd-numbered years. The Pacific Cup revived racing from San Francisco to Hawaii in 1980, and now finishes at Kaneohe, Oahu, in even-numbered years.

The start dates for the 2006 race will be July 3 to July 7.

At time of writing there are 47 entries and you can see the up to date entry list at www.pacificcup.org. There is plenty of room for more entries you can enter on-line at the Pacific Cup web site.
