America's Cup - A Groundhog win

For the last five days, Emirates Team New Zealand have needed just a single win to take the 34th America's Cup and for the fifth day in a row, the Kiwis have not been able to nail it.

It was a flood tide again, the wind was blowing at 11 knots at the scheduled start time. There was a 30 minute delay to allow the wind to fill in right across the course.

Now Oracle hit the line, first up on the foils she accelerated to the first turning mark. Five seconds ahead. Four start wins in a row to Spithill, Ainslie and Slingsby.

Oracle gybed out into the Bay extending on Emirates Team New Zealand.

Heading into the bottom mark, Oracle setting up for the left hand gate. Emirates right. 13 seconds back. The first tack on the upwind leg, a solid 175 metre led to the Americans. Tidal relief in the cone below Alcatraz and then on the city shore.

Oracle dictating terms as the two boats tacked up towards the Golden Gate Bridge. The leaders double tacked to ensure they rounded the favoured right hand gate, at the third mark at the top of the course there was 19 seconds between the two boats.

Cover, cover, cover. Oracle was staying up on the foils, more than Emirates Team New Zealand in these light conditions.

While this race would be completed inside the 40 minute time limit, the 30 minute start delay meant there will only be one race today.

Oracle blasted around mark four, 21 seconds ahead of their Kiwi rivals, and extended to more than 30 seconds at the finish line.

Heading into Day 14, Oracle Team USA continues her roll, now its 8-6, the Americans have won five in a row.

Jimmy Spithill ‘We have a huge wave of momentum. That start was a really tough one. We have been working hard at night, working out the plays.’

Dean Barker – ‘We were reasonably happy where we were ahead of the start. It was frustrating. We know we can win, just not (good) enough today.’
