Sail-World.com : Regatta numbers on the rise at Ohope regatta
Regatta numbers on the rise at Ohope regatta

'Local hot shots Chum Hay and Liam Marshall - Ohope Summer Regatta'    Monique Tarboton
The new summer regatta at Port Ohope Yacht Club really hit the ground running and hosted a great fleet of over 30 centreboarder’s competing in light winds and warm temperatures.

A large contingent travelled from Gisborne and Wairoa as part of a closer relationship between the three clubs in supporting each other's club regattas. The fleet comprising lasers, optimists, firebugs, toppers, sunbursts, and even the newly purchased IA Class of Bruce Kenyon from Wairoa looking very flash with it’s all vanish hull.

Close racing was the norm as sailors came to grips with the tide and building breeze, with race officer Derick Cassels-Brown doing a great job with the courses as the wind filled in around lunch time each day. Ohope yacht club has a great facility with their club building big enough to house the whole fleet overnight downstairs, and an upstairs lounge with perfect viewing of the racing and also the best after racing wharf jumping for the juniors at any yacht club. Well done to club Commodore Christine Chambers and club captain Ken Taborton and the team from Ohope for making it such a good regatta both on and off the water.

Ohope yacht club now looks forward to hosting the YNZ Sailing Have a Go trailer this week which will hopefully encourage the local primary school kids into the clubs learn to sail program.

Gisborne Yacht Club is now looking forward to their regatta which incorporates the Poverty Bay Champs on 16-17 March.
