'Racing off into the murk - Hartley 16 nationals 2013'

It was a windy start to the Hartley 16 Nationals in New Plymouth today with a steady 20 – 25 knots all day and a 3-4 metre swell just to make things interesting. There were 23 boats in total entered. Two races were held and the third one was abandoned due to the weather. Wayne Holdt won the first race with ease followed by Jason Holdt in second and Simon Holdt in third. After a couple more rescues, and only half the fleet left out on the course the second race was underway. Simon Holdt won the second race with Craig Canute in second and Allan Holdt in third. At the end of the day, Simon is in first overall and Jason and Allan Holdt second equal overall. On the damage report.... Two mainsails and two jibs blew out, two broken rudders and a broken mast with one boat putting a hole in their hull while launching. It’s been a busy afternoon repairing all the boats and sails to get ready for another full on day. Forecast for tomorrow is 15-20 knots. | 2013 Hartley 16 Nationals - Wayne Holdt |
