Bay of Islands Sailing Week: Regatta Ramblings No 6

Latest edition of the Bay of Islands Sailing Week News Closer and closer – and entries are still coming in. Take a look at your potential competition and DO IT. The Bay of Islands is a natural sailing and racing venue. To enjoy a variety of competition you don’t have to cross the Tasman, it’s in your own back yard. Join us for the fun three day regatta, from January 23 -24 - 25, 2013. The Tall Ships: On Saturday the 5th January, the annual Tall Ships race was held. Great sailing conditions -- 15 knots from the south east, sunny and no tropical cyclones in sight. Forty four classics and seventeen tall ships raced out, around, and across the bay. Ponsonby Scow took line honours in the tall ships division, while that honour went to Lion New Zealand in the classic division. One of the Sailing Week regatta bands (the Windjammers) played at the hangi afterwards at the Russell Boating Club – very popular. Will Calver of Ocean Photography will again be covering the regatta with daily videos from the day’s racing. If any owner or crew would like specific photos of their yacht, feel free to make direct contact with Will – will@oceanphotography.co.nz. Needless to say a good selection of photos from both Will and the Bay of Islands Sailing Week will be on the Regatta website after the racing. To see last year’s videos click on the utube Link on the website. We have had requests to introduce a B Division mainly aimed at 12 m plus production boats so we have done that. The web pages and Notice of Race have been amended and updated to include the B Division. The main features of this new B Division are: -- generally for production boats 12 m or longer -- boats in the PHRF band of approx. 0.830 to 0.880 -- IRC results will be given for A and B divisions combined (not separately for each division) -- General Handicap and PHRF results will be given for each division separately -- same daily racing programme as A, C and E divisions -- i.e. 2 windward/leeward’s plus bay race; or 1 windward leeward, 1 triangle and a bay race; or one heavy weather race -- entry fee same as for C Division: $225 for entries received from 1 Jan on. Having a B Division also means that the fleets will have closer boat for boat racing in A and C Divisions. Boats currently entered in A, B and C Divisions are: A Division: Carrera Crusader 35 Deep Throttle Georgia Kia Kaha M1 Power Play V 5 Wired B Division: Elysium High Octane Kaimai Express Nirvana Notorious Zealous C Division: Drop Dead Fred First by Farr Physical Favours Stratocaster Tongue Twister Wild Thing Remember registration is 4 to 6 pm on Tuesday 22 January in the North Sails Marquee at the Opua Marina.
